Gary's Story

Hi, all. Since I left CCHS in 1966, I've had a full life! Went to McGill from '66-'70 to get a B.Sc. (Math Major). During that time, I was also playing in the band (One Track Mind/Cargo) and did that full-time for a year after leaving McGill. Went back to McGill in '71 to get my teaching qualification, then taught Math and computers at MCMHS from '72 until '85. I left Macdonald-Cartier (now Heritage) in the era when a bunch of teachers were put "on availability", which meant, basically, that there weren't enough students left after Bill 101 to support the number of teachers we had in the school. Mr. Martini kept me around for a couple of extra years because I was the only one who could teach computers at the time, but eventually the union seniority requirements forced him release me after 13 years at the school. While teaching at Macdonald-Cartier, I also went to school during the evenings, as did many other teachers (more schooling = more pay), and, following in Janet Stocker's footsteps, managed to acquire a couple of Master's degrees - a Masters in Teaching Mathematics from Concordia in '78 and a Masters in Business Administration from McGill in '81, along with a Certificate in Computer-Based Information Systems in '84. The more I learn, the more I realize how much there is still to learn! Fortunately, life is a great teacher, as I'm sure you've all discovered. After leaving Macdonald-Cartier, I started working for myself as a computer consultant and also taught adult-ed courses at Dawson College and the McGill Faculty of Education. I did that until 1991, when I started working for Air Canada ...Expand for more
in their I.T. branch. When I was hired there, I discovered that the administrative assistant to my new boss was a former student of mine from MCMHS, Helene Chamberland - small world! I held several positions at Air Canada during the 6 1/2 years I was there, but my last boss was reluctant to release me to work on Internet stuff, so I left and came to Lower Canada College, a private K-12 school here in Montreal, where I was I.T. Director since 1998. I retired in December of 2012, to go back to consulting, music (with my band "Cadillac Music") and golf. I hope to be able to spend more time to get into music recording and video editing, and perhaps some writing - who knows? (I actually wrote a terrible book many years ago about a piece of computer software, and a copy of that book resides in the U.S. Library of Congress - you could look it up!) I've been very fortunate in my career and life - I've played in a band (and still do!), worked for myself, for a big corporation, and in both public and private schools. It's all been fun and I've worked with some great people, taught over 1500 students, and learned lots. I've managed to get through a bout with prostate cancer as well. I have three sons: Adam (b. 1980), Ryan (b. 1984) and Marc (b. 1991). All three of them still talk to me from time to time. :-) It's been great to reconnect with old acquaintances and former students on Classmates, Facebook, Linked-In, etc. We'll see where life takes me from here! Life is short, Break the rules, Forgive quickly, Kiss slowly, Love truly, Laugh uncontrollably, And never regret anything that made you smile.
