Gary's Story
Life
As you can tell by looking at my timeline here, I moved around a lot as a kid. Went to many different elementary schools and finally settled down in Longview,TX for my high school years. Had a great time at LHS, played football for the LOBO's and made some good friends, oh, I also managed to graduate and move on to college on a football scholarship. Read on, it gets better...
After graduating high school, I was married in July to Sherry Ansel from Provo, Utah - the girl I had been dating for most of my high school years. We went to Arkansas and I attended college on a football scholarship for 4 years where I majored in Business. While in college Sherry and I had two baby boys. We had two more baby girls so with 4 kids we decided that would be enough.
In 1985 we moved up to Alaska where Sherry's parents resided. I worked at a fertilizer plant as millwright supervisor for sixteen years in which I left August 2006. Then hired on with Conoco Phillips as a Maintenance Planner and now work on the North Slope as of September 2007. Sherry is a singer/songwriter as well as a wonderful mother and wife. She just completed 2 CD's and is working on another. Three of my kids are in college. Life moves very fast after school as I am sure most of you have discovered. If you are an old classmate and would like to chat, don't be a stranger - would be glad to share more.
College
For those of you that would like to send me an email we will have to put it in code or the classmate cops will arrest me.
Follow my lead, the first part of it is garyalaska and after that you will write at, then something that kind of rhymes with bamboo but it starts with a wie and is something you would yell maybe after you won a million dollar lottery. I think you can figure this out without too much thought. Good Luck and send me a note!
Workplace
Afte...Expand for more
r college and a BS in Business, I went to work at a Chemical Plant in Alaska as a Millwright (that's a glorified name for a plant mechanic), I was moved into training development to put together training plans on plant equipment, then I was moved into the planning dept. to assist with planning, then I assisted with a process improvement consultant team there at the plant until finally I became a Millwright Supervisor. Originally the company I worked for was Unocal through most of 2000 who then was sold to a company called Agrium that I continued to work through August 2006.
I was called about a Maintenance Planning position opening up on the North Slope with Conoco Phillips which seemed like a good career move at the time - so I interviewed, landed the job and here I am working on the slope every other two weeks. Now instead of driving to work, I get to fly to work. There are no roads in to the field I work at (except in the winter time when they actually construct a road of ice). I am liking this job and the schedule becuase it feels as though every other two weeks is a vacation. Also opens doors to live where ever a person would like. Still live in South Alaska - but who knows what the future holds? That's it in a nutshell. UPDATE: I was laid off from Conoco Phillips after working almost three years with them due to the drop in price on a barrel of oil from $135/barrel to $35/barrel. This presented a challenge because I was unemployed and the economy was not hiring. I went back to my tools as a millwright in the oilfields / refineries in Alaska for about a year until I finally hired on permanently with BP at a field on the North Slope. Have enjoyed this new job and I hope that I can work there either until I win a lottery or hit retirement age! Hey, LIFE will throw some curves at you - but keep your head up and never stop!
