Gary's Story
Hi Riverview alum - so many familiar names. A simple life back then/with a good education. Learned a lot in/out of school. Headed to the US after VHS, got an MBA, and started a business. Ran from the flats of Verdun - terrified I might live there permanently. Live in Florida and NY now.. Wife of 40 yrs and 3 daughters...2 who now run our company. Verdun was tough but realize as I get older the valuable lessons it taught me. It was our culture. Pretty girls and athletic/smart/tough kids. From other notes it sounds like many of us were successful. Appreciate Mr. Dawe; Ms Brown; and remember doing rods in Kindergarten class, singing God Save the Queen and Onward Christian Soldiers in grade 1 and playing ledgers in playground. Glenda who was the most beautiful 3rd grader ever, Judy who could beat all the boys up except Clifford, breaking my hand fighting with Gary T on Godin (during our annual fight day), Linda F...Expand for more
who wasn't tall but had the biggest heart and Donna R who I sat next to in 6th grade (but who liked Steven Parker more) and finally dodge ball during gym class. Best class - History - I believe the teacher was Mr. Cohen. Best lunch...hot dog and chips at fish joint on Verdun Ave and Woodland. Brown Park for skating, hockey, and in summer sprinkler, see/saw and sand box. Loved Steinburg's grocery shopping with my Mom - that stuck with me...still love grocery shopping to this day and of course Hockey Night in Canada with a big pot of tea and egg sandwich. Smoke Meat at the old Dunns and the sound/smell of Christmas shopping at Eaton's, Simpson's and Ogily's...very intimidating stores for me back then. Finally the smell of a Christmas tree on Beurling Ave...2 bedrooms (1 bathroom) and 7 of us in a flat....but heaven at Christmas time. Hope many of your memories are as good as mine. Gary
