Gary's Story

Hi! After graduating from NA I went to John Carroll University in Cleveland for 2 years but lost my student deferment (remember the draft?) due to an illness that caused me to drop out of school for a term. When I got my invitation to come down for a PRE induction physical I knew my civilian time as a student without a deferment was limited. So, I enlisted in the Navy for a 4 year hitch. Honestly speaking, it was one of the best life decisions I made. The Navy was very good to me and I got all, and more, than I was promised on enlistment. I chose to become an Air Traffic Controller and went to the ATC tech school in Georgia after Boot Camp in Illinois. From there I chose my sea duty assignment for the next two years aboard the USS F.D.Roosevelt. FDR was a Midway class aircraft carrier...1000 feet long, 64,000 tons, 73 aircraft, and 4,800 men. Our travels included the Atlantic coastal waters for a while on sea trails after an overhaul then on to Mayport, Florida which was our homeport. In the fall of 69 we went down to Guantanamo, Cuba for 2 months of exercises in the Gulf. We were briefly interrupted there when hurricane Camille decided to chase us out of there while it did urban renewal on the Gulf Coast. In January of 70 our orders to Vietnam were changed to a Mediterranean cruise of 6 months. We saw port visits to Barcelona, the Baleric Islands, Naples, Malta, Athens, Cannes France, and then to Rhodes Greece where my 2 years afloat came to an end and I flew back to the states for another ATC tech school in Georgia where I learned how to do precision radar guided talkdown approaches. Naval Air Station Lakehurst New Jersey was really awesome duty. I worked there in the Ground Controlled Approach unit for 2 years and really loved it. The Navy moved me back to Pittsburgh after my discharge in April 72 and I got a job working in Mellon Bank downtown for a year til the FAA hired me as an Air Traffic Controller in the radar center in Jacksonville, Florida. I sure liked the guys and gals I worked with there but FAA really sucked BAD! The equipment was poor with no backups and working conditions left a lot to be desired. Working 20-30 jets at a time wasn't uncommon and got pretty scary especially during computer/radar outages. During my time there the 300 coworkers of mine elected me as secretary treasurer of our PATCO local. In August of 81 PATCO and Reagan had a parting of the ways and almost all of us got fired for striking. That was a decision I've never regretted. I went back to college on the GI Bill at that time and got a second bachelors. ...Industrial Technology..from Univ of N.Florida. Texas Instruments recruited me from UNF in January of 83 and moved me here to the north Dallas area. I worked in the Defense Systems and Electronics Group, Missile Systems Div. as a Missile Systems Engineer for 8 years til the plant began downsizing radically. It closed down a year after I left. I decided to go into teaching at my wife's suggestion and got my certification as a Special Education Teacher. I worked mostly in middle school for 15 years and retired in May '07 to become a man of leisure. I have to admit that I'm thoroughly enjoying retirement! Hobbies and activities keep me busy but it sure is nice not having a boss, a work schedule and all the other things that go with working full time. My wife of 27 years, Mary Anne, was sister to one of my best buddy controllers in Jacksonville and we married in 82. Her brother died back in 91 of a heart attack at age 42 and is sorely missed. We have one son, Andy, who's 20 and currently a junior at University of Texas in San Antonio 300 miles south of here. Andy has been the joy of our lives. I got to spend 12 great years with him in boy scouting and went thru all the adult leadership trainings. I was asst scoutmaster of his troop. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout when he was 15 in 10th grade. I was and still am a very proud dad. I think I had at least as much fun during those years of scouting as he did. It kept me from becoming a couch potato. Currently, I'm an avid sailor. I still have the 11 foot Sunflower I bought in 1970 at Lakehurst that I learned to sail in, but I recently bought a larger sloop, a Catalina 25, that I keep docked over at Lake Grapevine near DFW airport. I also had a 23 foot sloop when I lived in Florida but sold it back in 81. I swim about 3+ miles a week at a local indoor pool to try to keep in shape. So far it seems to be working since I'm +/- 5 lbs of the same weight I was 30 years ago. My wife recently said she thought I was getting FAT! I mentioned this to my doctor during a checkup and he sent her a LETTER two days later telling her my weight is stable and not a concern. Now THAT'S a great doc! He's my HERO! I have the letter framed now too. There's a certain sweet satisfaction seeing one's mate be humbled a tad. I also still do Chess coaching at my old middle school every Wednesday which is a lot of fun for me. I take the club to the Texas Regional Championships every February and we usually finish in the top 5 teams there. We've finished 1st, 3rd and 2nd in the last 3 years. Recently I've been asked to assist coaching 2 days a week for an hour each time at a local grade school as a volunteer and that's going quite well. My other hobbies are collecting ancient Roman coins and also building scale military models. I give one hour lectures at local schools... history classes and history clubs.. using my collections as a focal point. Someone once asked me what my golfing handicap was and I had to tell them it was basic ability. I enjoyed the game but seemed to spend most of my time in the woods hunting for my ball or watching them splash into the nearest water hazard. It's amazing how water attracted my golf balls like a magnet! I never seemed to remember to bring along my mask, snorkel and fins to hunt for the balls I lose. I did keep a snake bite kit in my bag and a compass in case I got lost and couldnt find my way back to the clubhouse. My dad was a great golfer, rest his soul, but it sure wasn't in my genes! I guess practicing more than once a week would have helped. My skills were honed to a dull edge! I think I'll stick to sailing. I can always blame mistakes on the weather. Well, if you're still awake after reading all of this you have my sincere sympathy. Kidding aside, I'd love to hear from you so get in touch with me. I promise to respond asap. Classmates won't allow me to put other email addresses or phone numbers here but do email me here and we'll hook up somehow. I live in Highland Village, which is 25 miles north of Dallas. Large 2 story house with pool and hot tub and gazebo out back. Come visit. NEW NEWS! On Feb 14, 2009 my Chess club won the first place team trophy at the Texas Region 2 Scholastic Championships here! The team played 5 rounds each and...Expand for more
in the first round lost every single game....NERVES! But whatta comeback to be #1 at the end of round 5. I'm a happy coach! Feb 15 was my 62nd birthday. Time sure flys! More news! My son Andy, now 22, graduated from University of Texas San Antonio in May with a degree in Criminal Justice and is now home (July 2010) job hunting for something in law enforcement. It's sooooooooo great having my boy home for a while! In January 2010 I upped my distance swimming to 6+ miles a week, 2 miles at a time. It takes me about an hour and 10 minutes to do those laps but I really enjoy it while using my SwiMP3 player to listen to oldies during the swim. I've logged over 150 miles so far this year and want to pass 300 by Xmas if possible. More news! In Sept 2010 we bought two very cute Yorkie male pups. Winston and Oliver...and what a pair they are. They are well trained at this writing and are very friendly and playful. The doggie door is worth its weight in gold. In June of 2011 Andy got a job with a Dallas law firm.... in mortgage, finance and foreclosure. He moved out in December 2011 to get closer to his office and eliminate the hour -hour and a half each way commute plus tolls. He's now 2 blocks from his office and a 3 minute commute. We see him most weekends when he comes home for a visit. The pups adore him and I enjoy cooking him a good meal. I'm still keeping up with Chess as a volunteer coach and also with my long distance swimming. My wife and I will be celebrating our 30th anniversary in April and have booked a vacation to an all inclusive resort on St. Croix in the Virgin Islands from the 6th to the 12th. Since it's US territory we don't need passports or the hassle of Customs. We're having an awesome Spring here in Texas this year. My first day in my own pool was March 15th when the water temp hit 70... a tad cool but not lethal. Recent rains have filled the lake above normal where my sailboat is docked and I've had some really relaxing sails so far. If you're planning a trip this way PLEASE let me know. I can always use a crew on the boat or some idle chatter by the pool of days gone by. New stuff for 2014.... I'm going to try to attach a recent photo that my son Andy took of me while we were attending a Pirates vs Rangers game here in Sept of 2013. The Bucs swept the 3 game series which was nice! I hadn't been to a Pirates game since Spring of 1972 in Pittsburgh after I got out of the Navy. As I was posing for the photo one of the Pirates had hit a triple and I missed most of the action! ARRRRGH!! All is well here otherwise. I'm still doing the long distance swimming 3x a week all year which pleases my doctor and the bathroom scale! Chess coaching is on Thursdays this year. I will be 67 Feb 15th... OMG! Who is that old dude looking back at me in the mirror when I shave? My best friend from high school days, Paul Ghotlos NA 64, spent a weekend here in January on his was from Sacramento to Tampa where he bought a new condo to live in half the year. I had a 50th anniversary cake made to celebrate our friendship. I'm planning on flying down to Tampa after he gets settled and furnished there. It's always great to spend time with my old buddy! We met in Mr Rohrbach's Plane Geometry class in Fall of 1963 and sat at the same 2 student desk. Stay healthy! Best Regards, Gary I sure did have a blast at the 50th reunion in August. My son Andy was my wingman and he had a terrific time too seeing my old stomping grounds in Bradford Woods. The owner of my old house even gave us a tour inside. It's changed a LOT but my old bedroom looked pretty much the same. I got a lump in my throat thinking about all the memories my old house contained. I drove over to the old HS on Cumberland Road. We were chugging up the road from McKnight when Andy said something about the hill being so steep. I said, "Wait til we start down the other side!" He said, "What do you mean?" A few seconds later he said, "HOLY S#!T!" as the road dropped out of sight and we started down to the school. He got to go on the Duquesne Incline, toured around Heinz Field and PNB Park...yes, he's a Steeler fan even though this was his first trip to Pittsburgh. We also took a really fun trip to McConnell's Mill State Park which he and I really enjoyed. We just don't have that kind of scenery here in Texas. The reunion events were so well planned and the food was great. Greg Otto and Jeannie were terrific hosts for the picnic too. My only complaint was that it all went by so fast!!! Meeting everyone was so much fun. Some of the kids were classmates from my days at St. Alphonsus school in Wexford and we go back to 1953! It truly was hard holding back tears of joy seeing old friends. I've definitely become more emotionally sensitive in my old age! It must be the meds...or dementia. I have to blame it on something! What can I say about Marsha, Vivian, and all the other lovely women who put it all together? Thanks so much girls! I'll try to download some reunion pix here onto Classmates once my son sends them from his phone to mine. It's always nice to make new friends but rekindling old friendships is always the best. Remember, if you're passing thru the DFW area please don't pass my by. Better yet, stay a few days too. We have plenty of room, a nice pool and hot tub, and two little Yorkies who LOVE greeting human visitors. Please do keep in touch! Love you all! It's been 2 years since the reunion and barely a day passes that I don't think about it and the fun my son and I had. Andy's 29 now and still single. He's doing fine working as a leasing consultant in the Lewisville area 10 minutes from home. We see him at least once a week. The boy loves my cooking for some strange reason. I guess it always tastes better when someone else cooks it for you. I just finished the process of having the 4th roof put on my home since I had it built 22 years ago. Tennis ball sized hail was the culprit in late Spring. every home in my neighborhood got clobbered. I sounded like bowling balls bouncing off the roof and gutters. Hurricane Harvey never came close to us, barely a sprinkle. In March my wife got me a round trip ticket to Tampa to spend a few days with my old HS buddy Paul Ghotlos (NA64) and we had a blast. It was a nice birthday present to see him again. After the trip Mary Anne had some abdominal surgery which fixed one thing but has caused another. A breathing issue probably stemming from being put under. So we've been spending lots of time seeing specialists to try to get a fix on that. It's pretty much planted us here for a while near home so no new places were visited by us. I'm still trying to keep up with my indoor lap swims and getting over to my sloop at the marina for a sail on Lake Grapevine. If you're reading this please drop me a note here. I love hearing from old friends and ALWAYS answer.
