Gary's Story
School
School years were reasonably enjoyable but certainly a hard go at many times. The academic part came pretty easy. The social part was the most stressful. Ridgeview Elementary-tornado drills AND nuke bomb drills (ha, ha). Herbert Hoover JHS-Kennedy being assassinated. Favorite year was probably my freshman year at Rutherford B. Hayes HS in Delaware, Ohio. Soph-Senior years at JM were fine. In terms of memories that come to mind I'll offer a few. Teachers: H. Oliver Roberts was sometimes intimidating but really a hoot. Mr. Sparks shaving with his cordless razor every morning guarding the teachers' parking lot. Also his physics class (diesel train/smoke problem, CPR training, shifting floor tiles, and all the guys getting a swat for general principles on the last day of school. Ms. Knight... a 6cyl Corvette??? and snowballs in the classroom. And why did all the vice-principles have "ambiguous" first names? Events: the "walkout" and cross-town drive to Grant HS and of course, the jr v. sr egg wars. I think all-in-all, we got a pretty damn good public e...Expand for more
ducation when we went through school. Much better than what is on offer today. We were pretty insulated and naive regarding much of the "big" picture - no real worries. Integration and the threat of busing - glad I missed that. Have a lot of respect for Lawrence Jones for what he had to put up with as the first black male to become a "Bear." Left OKC after John Marshall and have moved around a lot over the years so not kept in contact with many classmates.
Military
The only lottery I've ever won was the very first draft lottery held fall 1969 - number 272. Thankful for that çause I got reclassified from 2S to 1A six months later. Don't know what ever happened to my draft card but I know I did NOT burn it. A lot of people I knew went to Nam and some did not come back. Thankful I didn't have to go but have every respect for those who did. I was and still am pretty much anti-war but I don't take issue with any of those who are in the armed forces. Think the real problem(s) stem from those making the decisions that put our military men and women in harms way.
