Gene's Story

I was on the Eastern Shore from High School graduation until March 7, 1969 when I entered the US Army. While I was in service my family moved back to Greenville, SC. My dad was from the Eastern Shore, my mom from Greenville, that's where we lived until February 1964 when we moved to Exmore. When I left the Army, I immediately began working in a Pizza Hut as a manager trainee in Greenville, SC. My dad worked for them also and he,was promoted to area manager about 9 months after I started. They told me I had to transfer to Georgia or resign, because my dad could not be my direct supervisor. So I move to manage a Pizza Hut in Gainesville, GA. I decided that I wanted to do something else, so I became a Deputy Sheriff for Hall County in Gainesville GA. After about 18 months as a deputy, my lifelong friend was promoted to Area Manager over all the Pizza Huts north of Nashville, TN. He started calling me every week trying to get me to come to work for him as a training manager working out of Clarksville, TN. I resigned as a deputy effective December 31, 1974. And moved to Clarksville, Tn. In less than a year, I was sent to Northern Alabama to Hire and develop Managers and key employees for five new Pizza Huts they were building in North Alabama. My first assignment was Florence, Al. I, moved there in December 1975. The store opened in February 1976, I was to remain there and continue to hire and develop Managers and key employees, until all the stores were completed and staffed. In March 1976, I met a beautiful girl Carole Joy (CJ), that worked in a pharmacy in the shopping center behind the Florence Pizza Hut. I asked her out and I guess you can say the rest is history. We got married on September the 24, 1976, 5 months after we met. And this September 2015, we will be married 39 years. I left Pizza Hut in November 1978 and bought in to a 2 store Sandwich and Deli operation, named Chicago Connection Delicatessen . Mainly because I was going to college early mornings and evenings. And the demands of my Pizza Hut position were not conducive to someone going to college. I, graduated from Northwest Alabama Junior Collage in 1980 and Graduated from, The University Of North Alabama with a Major in Accounting and Minor i...Expand for more
n Marketing in May 1982. Soon after Graduation, I was offered a position in adminstration for the Tuscumbia Alabama Pepsi Cola Plant . I took the job and step back from the day to day operation of the deli's. We bought out our partners of the deli's in 1987 and sold out in 1997. Our first child was born 3/02/1979 (son, Micah Gene Colonna) .I was in Sales Management at the local Pepsi plant in Tuscumbia. I worked for Buffalo Rock Pepsi Cola for 25 years and retired in 2006. I also, served in the Alabama National Guard for 25 years, combined with my active duty service, I have a total of 28 years and 2 days. I retired as a First Sergeant in April 2005 Also, I was active in the community I served on 19 Service boards usually a two year term for each And I am Past President of the Alabama Restaurant Association and served on their board of directors for 5 years. Our daughter ( Julie Ann Colonna ShultZ) was born 10/02/1984. This area is known as the Shoals area, it consist of the cities of Tuscumbia, Sheffield and Muscle Shoals on one side of the Tennessee River and the City of Florence on the other side of the river. We lost our son, Micah in an accident last May 14, 2014. He and his wife developed compound pharmacy's through out, the State of Alabama. He also was an inventor and had patents pending when he died. His wife is trying to change the patents to her name. They had no Children. Our Daughter is 30 years old and has been a pharmaceutical representative since she finished college. Her and her husband a police officer are trying to get pregnant now, hopefully soon a grandchild . We are, as most of you are, empty nesters and are downsizing to a 1425 square feet patio home. I have no idea what we are going to do with all the furniture and stuff we have to get rid of, we have 26 days to move. Unfortunately I have been dealing with some health issues for several years, that limit my travel. Hopefully, I will improve and be able to visit The Eastern Shore in a year or so. You can find me on facebook..I have kept in touch with HM Arnold and Buddy West. I only know what they have told me about our classmates and would like to find out more. That is all I can think of for now, if you have any questions e-mail me.
