Gerald's Story
Joined the Army Band program Dec 1953.
Army Musician 1954-56, remained in Army and Navy reserves until 1988. Married High school Sweetheart Shirley Carnes(from Eagle Point)1954. Spent 1956 with Army Band in Korea. Two children born, 1955 and 1957. Received Associates Degree from Oregon Tech 1960 and moved to Las Vegas. Worked at the Nevada Test site for Lawrence Radiation Lab. Worked on a reactor powered ram jet engine and on nuclear weapons testing in the Nevada desert. Two more children born in Las Vegas. Worked there seven years then relocated to Washington State to work at Battelle Northwest National Laboratory doing optical and thin film research. 1970 Transferred to Westinghouse H...Expand for more
anford Company to develop instrumentation for Nuclear reactors. Also worked nine years developing components for the nations "star wars" orbiting missle defence system. Retired from Westinghouse Dec 1994 then returned to Battelle as "hands on"consultant making a component for a large large particle accelerator at Los Alamos National Lab in New Mexico. Finally retired completely in 2003. When you find a job you really like, you will never work another day in your life. It has been a "Hobby" job all these years. We enjoy our children, 12 grand children, and soon to be 7 great grand children. We enjoy traveling around the country with our truck and fifth wheel trailer. Its a good life.
