Geraldine's Story
Life
I'm married to Hubert Jacobs (nicknamed 'Jake'), since 10-01-1961. He was
a widower with a 4 year old son, Mark, and a 2 year old daughter, Donna, and
we moved to Omaha, NE, immediately, as his employment was here. We have
had a son, Philip, and a daughter, Beth, since. All are grown, married, and three
have children, and 2 grandsons are married and have children--3 great-
grandchildren. Philip is full-time Nat'l Guard (Iowa), nearing retirement, and has
been deployed to Afghanistan, returning June, 2005. His wife is a LaVista,Ne
Police Officer. We have four younger grandchildren, only one, the youngest,
age 9, is a girl. We are very blessed, as all have been and remain close to
each other and we parents. They are attentive and caring and bring us the
many pleasures that people desire as they age. Hubert and I are in our mid-
seventies, and have numerous health concerns, but are able to be 'on our
own' and live in the home we bought and moved into in 1975. We no longer
travel very much, except to the nearby town of Gretna, where Hubert's Mom
now lives, in her own apt., 'on her own'. Also, our eldest lives in Emporia, KS
and we go there at least once a year, but he and his family come to visit us
more often. Mark, and our daughter, D...Expand for more
onna, are both enjoying being grand
parents. Donna and Beth both are settled in the Millard suburb of Omaha near
us, and we take care of their children when school isn't in session, except
we share with other childcare resources, such as Kids' Network, or other
grandparents. We enjoy them so much.
Our computers are mainstays for us in keeping up with things, and e-mail
is our preferred way of keeping in touch. Where it is impractical, we phone.
I'm still a collector ('packrat', really), and I've been painting--oils, for 40
years, and am not famous, yet. My husband is wood carving, and so we have
lots of requests--special orders, you might say.
We attend the Pacific Springs Assembly of God church, which is just about
1 and a half miles west of our home. Retirement is a relief, of course, but time
has a way of demanding that we contribute in some meaningful way, and we
haven't had a shortage of projects. The big one now is sorting and clearing
out of the house all of the 'stuff' that we've accumulated through the years.
Pictures, and all kinds of kidstuff, and keepsakes, and treasures of our lives
are hard to prioritize.
Perhaps this is enough to give an idea of how things are with me. I hope
there are a few of you who respond.
