Gerard's Story

Life Gerard M. Hartley CD, MA, BA Mr. Hartley is currently employed as Vice President Business Development with Luxell Technologies Inc. of Mississauga, ON, Canada. Mr. Hartley was born in Dunville, Newfoundland, enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1965 and was commissioned through the Officer Candidate Training Plan (OCTP) in 1971. On graduation from the Canadian Forces Officer Candidate School he was trained as an air weapons controller and began a tour of duty as an intercept director at the 22nd NORAD Region, North Bay, Ontario. In May 1972, Mr. Hartley was assigned to the Manual NORAD Control Centre (MNCC) at Goose Bay, Labrador, as a senior director and intercept director. He was promoted to the rank of Captain in April 1974. In August 1974, he was reassigned to St. Margaret's, New Brunswick, where he became an Aerospace Command and Control systems Computer Programmer/Systems Analyst. This speciality took him, in July 1977, to the 26th NORAD Region, Luke AFB, Arizona, where he was the Assistant Director of the Semi-Automated Ground Environment (SAGE) Programming Agency until July 1980. Returning to Canada in July 1980, Mr. Hartley was again assigned to the 22nd NORAD Region as a Senior Director. In 1981, he attended the Canadian Forces Staff School at Toronto, Ontario. In 1982 Mr. Hartley was promoted to the rank of major and selected to attend university for one year under the provisions of the University Training Plan for Officers (UTPO). In May 1983, he graduated from the University of Manitoba with a degree in history and was assigned to Fighter Group Headquarters at North Bay as Staff Officer for Ground Environment Training. Data and Analysis Branch with USSPACECOM. In 1987, he was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel and reassigned to the 1st Space Wing, Peterson AFB, Colorado, as the Canadian Forces Assistant Deputy Commander for Operations. During this assignment, he began a program of graduate studies with Webster University of St. Louis and, in December 1988, graduated with a Master of Arts degree in space systems management. In January 1989, he was reassigned to the United States' Armed Forces Staff College, graduated on 30 June 1989 and was posted again to North Bay as Commanding Officer 21 AC&W Squadron. In August 1991, Mr. Hartley was transferred to the CONUS NORAD Region, Tyndall AFB, Florida, as an Air Defence Director and in July of 1992 became Commanding Officer CF Detachment and Deputy Director NORAD Systems Support Facility (NSSF), also at Tyndall AFB until July of 1995. In Aug 1995 he assumed the role of Wing Commander/Base Commander 9 Wing/CFB Gander and served there until retirement from the Regular Force on 15 Aug 96. He immediately took the position of Managing Director, CAE Shaheen (Pvt) Ltd, an aircraft repair and overhaul company in Islamabad, Pakistan until January of 1998. Spar Aerospace Limited purchased all of CAE’s aviation interests in 1998 and upon his return to Canada, Mr. Hartley was invited to provide Business Development consultancy support to that company which he did until May of 2001. After a 3 year period ending January 2005 with Northrop Grumman Canada Corporation Mr Hartley began his Business Development consultancy business and represented such businesses as Acrohelipro Inc of Richmond BC and Luxell Technologies Inc of Mississauga, Ontario until Dec of 2007. Mr. Hartley and his wife Linda reside in Bath, Ontario.
