Gerry's Story
Was a new dirt road when I moved to Kerwin Rd at age 6 right off Tenbrooke Dr and University Blvd was a 2-lane road in '53 and asphalt was just being laid for Kerwin Rd. Days were safer then; even walked to & from Four Corners Elementary thru 1955....then on to McDonald knolls thru to 1959. Recall lots of woods for fort building & and many dirt hills piled up at the end of Kerwin Rd with University not far ahead where for reasons known only to kids that age we'd engage in dangerous rock throwing battles (unbeknownst to our parents) in those dirt piles where someone would eventually get struck in the head by a rock & run home screaming. Lots of good memories though with sleding down the Sligo hill, touch football, baseball, basketball around the Sligo rec center and YMCA activities. Lived on Kerwin, 11 yrs, walked countless times to (Four Corners) Woodmore Shopping Center for Larry's 5&10 to sit at the soda fountain in People's Drug and drink a chocolate or cherry coke. Like everyone else in those days, walked a half mile to school, in the rain, in the snow. Many Friday nights were spent at Fred & Harry's where my father would have enought money left over at weeks end to buy a crab cake & a beer. Remover well going to all the Northwood & Blair teenclub...Expand for more
s on the weekends, as well as the CYO dances at ST BERNADETTES. Family moved in my senior year to the new Calverton Subdivision. Commuted back & forth to Northwood, 9 miles each way and finished out Northwood. In the summer of '65, I worked for W L MEEKINS Land Surveyor for a year then assigned to the courthouse in Upper Marlboro to search title for that business. This came to a quick halt when to my chagrin, rec'd a letter from the President drafting me into Army service in a 10,000 man callup for Aug '67 which began a 6 year committment, total. Assigned to a combat unit in Vietnam with the 1st Infantry Division, made SGT, had a squad, remained in the field for the entire year; came down w/falcip malaria; recovery took 30 days; returned to the jungle. Tour ended, returned to the states, went to college, federal govt career began in the accounting field at the Washington Navy Yard, then out to San Diego as Budget & Accounting analyst. Then to New Orleans as budget branch head, then to 4th Marine Division as budget officer, then to Stennis Space Flight Center as Associate Director of the Budget. Then retired in New Orleans from pressure-packed arena to calm, self-imposed pressure only in Florida, near the ocean...playing lots of GOLF at so many courses.
