Gerry's Story
After graduation, in August I went to work for the US Forest Service, Angeles N.F. working from Hot Shot crewman, Engine fireman, apparatus engineer, and Fire Prevention Technician. In May of 1964 "Uncle Sam" knocked at my door, inviting me into the Army, serving in Alabama and Georgia, as Crash Rescue Firefighter for two years, then happily returning home to resume my career.. In November of 1967 I took the test and went to work as Firefighter for L.A. County Fire Department., mostly working the fire patrol position out of Glendora, and the Antelope Valley area and retiring in 1999
I was heavy into snow skiing, Alpine and Nordic, having been on the Nat'l. Ski Patrol for several years. Held offices (Nordic Director) for FWSA LA Council, and the Wailers Ski Club (Race Chairman), where I met my wife, Carolyn. We married in January of 1975, living in Duarte, and had our only child, our son, Erik, a year later, who, sadly, we lost to diabetes complications in 2007. In 1976 we moved to Juniper Hills and got into horse...Expand for more
s and continued actively with that endeavor, running an equestrian center for Spring Valley Lake HOA for a couple years. In 1999, after 39 years of fire service I had to finally hang up my helmet , retiring. After living by a schedule all those years, I enjoy just kicking back and doing what I want to do when I want to do it. We started sissy camping (RVing) back in 1995, We recently spent two summers touring western Canada and Alaska, and planned to eventually tour the remaining 1/3 of this wonderful country.
As a result of the famous Camp Fire of November 2018 we lost our home, everything and nine months later I lost my wife, Carolyn, indirectly as a result of the stress of the fire, etc., and Parkinson's / dementia, In trying to restart a new life, After nearly a year of moving around from Hotel to Hotel, I relocated to a house, still in the "burbs", with a great view, in the neighboring mountain community of Forest Ranch. Once all gets settled, I hope to resume some RV travel, along the north coast. What next, who knows?
