Glen's Story

Life WOW! It has been a very interesting life so far, and it just keeps getting better. As my school friends know, my first name is Glen, but I am now usually known as Stafford 'Doc' Williamson. If you cut'n'paste that into Google you'll find a ton of stuff I've been doing. I am married. My wife Maggie is from NYC, we met in Los Angeles, now we live in a suburb of Phoenix called Peoria, a retirement community with minimum age restrictions. Maggie has no fondness for children, but we love animals and have had a constant stream of them over our 29 years of marriage. I have had over 50 differnt "jobs" in the last 40 years, many of which were simultaneous or overlapping, much of it what I called "self-unemployment". Cowboy, realtor, ballet dancer (opening of the National Arts Center in Ottawa, National Ballet of Canada --I was paid -as an "extra" though they actually offered me a non-dancing job!). After gradutation from University of Calgary in 1973, BFA Drama, I was offered an apprentice job with Second City Improv group in Edmonton but had to turn it down (perhaps foolishly). I eventually turned to writing which caused me to take up computers to manage to squeeze a living from Hollywood. Computer consulting led to work for Quarterdeck, where I was soon one of the top 100 (or so) PC memory experts in the world. Ironic, in the extreme, because I am constantly struggling to remember things. The writing meanwhile led to meeting a lot of "top" Hollywod types, stars, writers, producers and directors. It didn't pay well, but I made an occasional sale, and for a couple of years had an office in Lionsgate Studio across the hall from a man who would later be head of Universal, and down the hall from Emilio Estevez, a couple of top directors and the (later) president of the Screen Actors Guild. Quite likely none of them remember me now. (Not strictly true, I am sure that Richard Mazur remembers me, he's just one of those unbelievably "nice" guys.) I also got involved in xDSL (high speed internet over phone lines) and became a guru to the world on the subject of video over Internet Protocol, for a short time. Quarterdeck sent me all over the world, Hong Kong, Brazil, Singapore, Beijing, and exotic, far away Canada (Toronto). I also recently visited Switzerland for my nephew's wedding, with a few days in Paris along the way. Maggie refused to fly with me, in part because our trip to London (and Stratford-on-Avon) via Canada turned into a nightmare of 24 hours of flying a few years earlier. My sisters have recently moved to Vancouver Island, (older sister Carol has since died, Barbara is still living there) and my best friend from Bell High School, Bruce Batchelor, now lives there too, so that brought on a visit. I have published several books, 2 "children's" books that are really remedial readers for 7th and 8th graders, but delightful as read-aloud for nursery age and challenging readers for advanced primary grade readers. Anot...Expand for more
her book on sub-atomic physics, and a stage play in the style of Neil (Doc) Simon -- Three characters and a bowl of chicken soup (well, not exactly, but lots of laughs). I recently started a division of my (tiny) company to build factories that produce synthetic diesel from waste materials. In broad terms most people call this "biodiesel" but that has a specific legal meaning in the USA that this stuff would not satisfy, so it is "non-ester renewable diesel". The risks are not small but with incredibly cheap feedstock materials (sewage and manure -- some people will actually pay us to take it from them) and aiming our "diesel" at the high end aviation market, we think we have a winning combination. Check out our web site at winfotech.com or daochienergy.com or look for my columns in Americna Chronicle (online as americanchronicle.com) (and 20+ other sites) which also has a brief bio and links to my web site. I hope all my old friends are having a wonderful life. Best wishes to all of you, everywhere! Love, Stafford 'Doc' Williamson School If you remember Jack, and Jack, and Don, and Phil (no not the Everly Bros.) and Glen and Marguite and Remo, then you probably were a classmate of mine. All of them were inspirations to me in one way or another. If you don't recognize those names, they were our teachers from 1964 to 1968 (or '69 in some cases). I had more "crushes" on more girls than I could count, and dated 13th graders (even though I left for Carleton [early] after 12th myself) and 9th graders when I was in 11th, I think. I remember a few girls who had crushes on me, though I sometimes wonder why, and even more I wish I had taken the time to know many of them better, not to mention that some girls I remember now that I realize I should have had a crush on and overlooked at the time. Band and the school Musicals made school tolerable when I was losing interest in the "straight A's" thing, and those are still some of the best memories and the best times of my life. To all of you who shared those times with me, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. After 30 years or more, I reconnected with my best friend from high school days, Bruce Batchelor, who has changed so little since then (except for some hair lost on top and some beard thickening on the chin), that seeing him again (on Vancouver Island, where he now lives) was one of the best experiences of my life (well, you know, after we discount sex, drugs and rock'n'roll, and maybe even better than most of that too). (Okay, maybe NOT better than sex.) I still miss the golf course, and all my friends there, especially all the sun-baked denizens of the pool, and particularly the beautiful life guards and friends there. High school is hell sometimes. I remember some of that too, but I choose to remember you all with fondness. If anyone sees "Suzie Creamcheese" or Christine, tell them I still love them, more than they will ever know. love to all Stafford "Doc" Williamson (aka "Glen")
