Glenda's Story

Life Hey. I'm pleased to announce that I'm still a smartass (some things never change)!!! After obtaining a totally useless B.A. in English from St. Ambrose University, I married Michael Westerfield (class of '90). Mike is an active duty military member, who was sent to Korea two weeks after we were married. Since I could not go to Korea, and had not come across that million dollar job, I decided to go to law school. I packed our children (now 9 and 6)into the mommy-mobile and headed for Missouri. During my 1L year, Mike returned and Lo and Behold...we become parents for the third time(like you didn't see that coming). Due to a few health issues, I took a year off from school to look after baby. During that time, I worked for the Innocence Project assisting in overturning wrongful convictions due to prosecutorial misconduct. Baby and I are now just fine and I am finishing my 2L year. I have two semesters left if I don't flunk anything. I just started a new job exposing mid Missouri's arrests due to racial profiling, and am working to enact legislation that will introduce greater access to higher education for children of migrant workers. My father still resides in Davenport, so I come back at least twice a year (basically during the holidays that involve free food). Am I the only one who can't figure out how I jumped from 18 to 27 in such a short period of time? Hey again...I thought after three years I'd better update this thing. I finally graduated from MIZZOU's law school(WHOOHOOOO!!!GOODBYE CONLAW And SECURED TRANSACTIONS!!!) and have an interesting but monetarily challenged (don't cha love euphemisms?)job doing research on hate crimes. My husband finally got out of the military, and is working to finish his degree in Marketing. The kids are now 12, 9, and 4(going on 40. He starts every sentence with "Obviously")and doing great (it's getting harder and harder to pretend I'm sixteen. My son is the same height I am and wears a 10 mens shoe). I've decided(after much nail biting and debate)to take the Iowa Bar this February, so those of you still in the Q-C area may see me milling about (in various stages of insane panic depending on how close I am to test time). My goal is to open up my own practice, and If I can convince anyone to jump onboard, a firm. Until then, I'll be working for a firm in the area. ...And Three months later I'm now in Iowa (Alternately "hating life/thinking I made a mistake & loving life/thinking this may just work out" the way all control freaks who lose their minds for a moment and move back to Iowa against better judgement do--er--sorry about that. I'm the only one.) Anyway, took an ethics test recently (now why would an attorney need ethics? Go figure!) and gearing up for the Bar. Now working as a substitute teacher torturing local children just for fun and doing freelance legal research not for fun. Those of you still here, if you happen to see me and I look like I'm...Expand for more
going mad, don't be afraid to wave hello anyway. If I stare back with a blank look on my face, it's because I'm old (20something slipped by awfully fast) and senile, not retarded. ...After a very interesting year teaching Legal Classes at Kaplan University, I have now moved onto practicing law full time and am defending the nutjobs of Scott County (with a few sane ones thrown in just to mix things up a bit). I am now Licensed in Iowa, and studying for the Illinois bar (I'm sure that there are some criminal defendants in Illinois just waiting to abuse my trust...YIPPEEE!!!...can't wait). ...Gee, I hop around a whole helluva lot!!! I had fun in Iowa (seriously I did...no shortage of people willing to do stupid stuff and wanting a miracle after the fact) and wished I could take the courtroom atmosphere (lovely attorneys--mostly, and judges, wonderfully whackedout defendants) from the QCA and plop in down right here in Good ol' Savannah Georgia. Thats What I said G-E-O-R-you know the rest, hell, I have a headache just trying to spell it. I am TRYING MY BEST to get used to it here...but damn if some of the people here aren't a lil bit on the slow side. LOL. Anyway, seriously, I just got here in March (My hubby went back active and is stationed at Hunter) and during my first doctors appointment, learned that I have cancer. So, I've slowed down to only doing a little bit of legal work(pushing paper, and consulting for jury trials) from home while battling the beast (missing the courtroom horribly...I love the sight of orange jumpsuits in the morning) and taking it all in stride. I am blessed, and know that all things work for the greater good. My oldest is about to be 16!!! I can't believe it!!! And he will not bring any of his friends around me, and tells me that he has no stories about me clean enough to tell my future grandkids...it hurt at first, but hey, at least I WASN'T BORING. I LIVED and I LOVED, and that is what matters most to me. I may not be a perfect mom, but I don't think I did too bad for a chick who was a baby when she had a baby. Unfortunately for him, he was the first, and they don't come with instructions. We basically have grown up together, but he is my best friend and I Love him more than life itself. In the event that I should parish without knowing a grandchild, maybe one of you who knew me when can think of something I did that was not horrible, or wild, or loud, or opinionated (who the hell am I trying to fool anyway?) and tell them. I ran into Crystal Schumacher's parents at a restaurant in Davenport one night, and her dad told my kids how fast I used to run...and they were like "yeah, right..." I have stopped trying to convince them that I was ever anything more than mom. I will not be making the 15 year (DAMN WE ARE OLLLLLLD!!!)reunion...and I am a lil bit sad. But I want everyone to spread the love (not you married folks...lol) and have at least one drink in my name!!!
