Gloria's Story
Life
My family is an old New England family, my ancestors came to Hingham, MA in 1637 from Hingham, Norfolk England, so in a way I feel more connected to this land than many others. Another reason is that my birthday is July 5th and my family always celebrated it on the 4th and I always felt like the whole country was celebrating it with me! I especially remember the wonderful July 4th celebrations in Lynnfield in which my cousin Brenda Rodkowski and I never failed to win at least one of the races.
I married Jim Cooper in 63, and radicals that we were, we became hippies throughout the 60's. We had 3 kids by 1969, the middle one born in California in 66 and we now have 9 wonderful grandkids, the oldest, 22, born on my 40th birthday. We've lived in MA, FL, CA, AZ and NH and the last 20 yrs in Denver (our homebase) I was fortunate to find a husband like Jim. We only knew each other a week when we married in "late December 1963" as the old song goes, and because we shared such an adventurous nature we've had a wonderful, exciting life. We've seen so much and done things others only dream of doing.
I went to college after the kids were in school and became a graphic designer and worked for magazines and newspapers for many years. I once worked at Disney World as a portrait artist 72-76 and my kids loved that... lots of freebies! I became a Christian in 72 after a really radical conversion from atheism and I'm still devoted to Jesus Christ. Jim came to the Lord soon after as did the rest of the family. I've always been something of a radical and I guess I still am. I fully intend to "live out loud" until I die. I have loved my life, I have enjoyed everyt...Expand for more
hing. I've held loosely to "stuff" but have held on dearly to what matters: faith, family and dear friends. I loved growing up in Lynnfield. My family was rather poor but I never envied my richer friends because I got to enjoy what they had without having to own much!
Now that I'm old I share my many stories with my grandkids and they are always asking for more. I took up photography in college and have continued with it until now I have photos of every good time and spectacular sight I have ever seen. Maybe someday I'll write a book, people have often asked me to, but for now my life is still a "happening thing". I have begun to get into scrapbooking these days which ties right in with my advertising design background and artsy bent with my love of photography and especially with all the photos many stories I have!
School
I left high school before I graduated at the end of my 11th year and deeply regretted it. Our house had burned down when I was 15 and it threw my life into complete chaos but I did get my diploma later and finally went to college at 30 after the kids were all in school. I will always be grateful for my time at LHS. Wonderful times and a great education!
College
Went to Chamberlayne Jr. College in Boston and got a degree in Advertising Design. It was right in the heart of the art district and I loved it! I enjoyed all my artsy friends and professors. I hated to have it end. I went on to UMASS Boston later and hated it. A very cold and impersonal school. I've taken several correspondence courses over the years and continue to LOVE the library and continually learning new things. So much to see and do and learn and so little time!
