Gloria's Story

Life At Minico High School, you knew me as Gloria Jensen. I was involved in Girls' Choir, French Classes, Shorthand Classes, Seminary, and remember a lot of great friends. I worked at the Rupert Rexall Drugstore as Pharmacy Tech, typing labels, then putting all the info onoto the person's history record. (No Computers then, just good old typewriters). I also worked as a clerk on the floor, and then was trained to work with posting and billiing on the accounts our customers had. Mr. Clarence Birrer was the owner; I worked with Angela Klingler, Dale Walters, John Fisher, and more. In the summer of 1973 my family moved to Richmond, UT just about a week before my Senior year began. Our move date was Aug. 25, 1973. I got registered at Sky View High School and started into an adventure. Because of the credits I already had from Minico, my counselor was able to schedule about 90% of classes in the Business Education area: Shorthand, Business Machines, etc. Sky View seemed more like a Junior College set up than High School; it was so exciting! I was selected as Sterling Scholar/Business Education. I had no idea of what the Sterling Scholar Program even was or what it entailed. It was a lot of work - a personal portfolio with samples of all my Business class skills, photos, letters of recommendation, etc. Then on to the State one-on-one interview sessions in Woods Cross, UT. I didn't make it to State level, but that was okay; I received wonderful experiences, and learned so much from all the hard work in the process. At the beginning of 1974, I had a couple of free class spots, so I was allowed to enter a type of work/credit program. I got my job as a secretary at the Utah State University Bookstore, taking dictation, typing everything in sight, and also working in the Art Dept., which at that time was across the hall from the main Bookstore. I worked with Gaylene Eppich, and so many others I can't remember all their names. I continued working there after graduation and all through my college years at USU. I met Jim Crowther at Utah State University in August 1974, shortly after the death of my older sister, Sandy. (Sandy attended Minico High School from 1966 - 1970) Sandy got married on Aug. 2, 1974, but was in a tragic car accident on the way home from their honeymoon, and died on Aug. 8, 1974 in Fallon, NV. That was one of the hardest times in my life. Jim Crowther is from Malad, ID and was a music major at USU. We both lived in the "Morm Dorms" up on the hill east of campus by the Delta Phi House. In the LDS ward we attended, Jim was called to be the FHE Leader, or 'Dad', and yes, I was called to be the Assistant FHE leader or 'Mom' for our group which consisted of his apartment of 6 guys and my apartment of 6 girls. Jim & I became good friends and spent quite a bit of time together just with FHE activities and discussions about problems, personalities, or plans for great uplifting experiences to have with the group. Jim did ask me out several times, but I kept putting him off, because I was rather involved in a few other ralationships/possible relationships. I finally gave in and went on a first date with Jim to a basketball game in January 1975. I thought that was fairly safe territory! Our friendship kept growing, and there were more dates. Then on May 25, 1975 he said he had special plans for a special date. Okay--- we got permission to be late coming back to the dorm because he said we were traveling a bit. He showed up at the door with roses, we went down to Maddox's for a wonderful dinner, and then to the new musical movie "Tommy" in Ogden. It was a great evening, a really fun date, but I thought as we went back to Logan, "what does he expect for this?" I did let him kiss me (for the first time) that night. So from January through May before the kiss! Jim received his mission call to the Scotland/Northern Ireland. Over Memorial Day weekend that next week, I went with Jim and his family to their cabin at Williams Lake up around the Salmon, ID area. As we spent time together talking and really listening to each other, there was no doubt in our minds that I would wait for him to return in two years, and we would get married. He left on July 12, 1975. We wrote a lot of letters, he called me when he was allowed, and flowers seemed to arrive on all the right occasions!. I finished all my college courses and graduated from Utah State University in Logan, UT with a B.S. in Business Education/Secretarial Training. (Finished all classes in Dec. '76, graduation in May '77. I had worked at the Bookstore all through college, but started a new job in January 1977 at Cache Valley Cheese Factory in Smithfield, UT. I worked as a personal secretary to the manager and assistant manager, was the receptionist for the main office, then started helping with the accounting dept., the payroll dept., and more and more computer programming for reports, etc., as the technology progressed. Jim returned home July 12, 1977, we got my ring for the official engagement, and we were married 6 weeks later on September 2, in the Ogden LDS Temple. We bought a home in Preston, ID, and I continued working at Cache Valley Cheese while Jim w...Expand for more
ent back to USU - this time with a major in Political Science/Pre Law. Life was fun and great, but with the normal challenges of school, work, and being newlyweds. Our 1st daughter arrived the next November 1978, and I left Cache Valley to stay at home for a few months. Early 1979, I started working for my father-in-law who had a Law Office/Land Title Office there in Preston. I was a legal secretary for him and also another attorney that worked in the same office space, and I also learned to do Land Title Research and platting, to trace land ownership for property deeds, etc. Jim would work part-time there after he finished classes in the mornings. It was a very practical and convenient arrangement that worked out well for all. Jim graduated from USU in June of 1980, and we moved to a new home in Kearns, UT with daughter #2 on the way. Jim worked for a Land Title Office in SLC until Jan. 1982 when he went to work for Prudential Financial Insurance. Things got much better as far as working hours, working stress, and better finances. Daughter #3 arrived in July of 1982 in Salt Lake. I was lucky enough to be able to stay at home with the wee ones, and Jim enjoyed his work and did well. So well that he was promoted to a Manager position in Provo, UT, and we moved there to a beautiful new home in Orem which we had had built on May 30, 1984. Daughter #4 arrived in December 1984. I was busy with the kids, and when they started going to school, I did start some daycare, giving my littler ones someone to play with, and to provide a bit of 'pocket change' for fun things. Daughter #5 arrived in March 1987. Then came a great adventure. Jim's agents in the Provo office won a production citation in 1988 which applied to the entire Salt Lake District top producers, so we were blessed to go to the IBC (Internationsl Business Conference) to be held in April 1989: in Rome, Italy. We were SO excited! We decided to make the most of the opportunity, so we had a young married couple come stay with the kids, and took 21 days in April for the trip of a lifetime! We had 5 days and nights in Rome for the conference, then went by train to Paris. We spent only 2 days walking the city, taking a tour, going to Versailles, etc. I have to go back sometime. Then we took the Hover Craft (UGH) across the English channel and spent 3 days in and around London. We received permission to visit my nephew who was on a mission outside of London: took he and his companion to lunch, ran them around on some errands, etc. We got the 'real' fish & chips, wrapped in newspaper, THE BEST FOOD ever. We then rented a small car and traveled up through England, staying at Bed & Breakfasts; then into Scotland. We went through the areas Jim had served in on his mission; his apartment in Dumbarton was still there and still looked just the same as the picture he sent. We visited Edinburgh Castle, Prince's Street, bought a couple of kilts, and had a fantastic time in general! We did return home to country, kids, and job. Jim was then offered another promotion, and that's what brought us up to Pocatello, ID. We were told it would be for 2-3 years, then back to Utah, but it's been 19 years here now, and I'm not holding my breath. I was a stay at home mom until my youngest daughter went to school, then went to a variety of jobs, some great, some not so great, became a Certified Wedding Specialist and had my own business to run. We did everything for Weddings/Events planning. Decoration, cakes, flowers, setup, takedown, etc. When I came home from a 2nd back surgery and laid down on the sleeper sofa bed in our family room and frosted and decorated a 7 layer wedding cake, I thought, "something's wrong with this picture". So we sold most of our inventory, did just a few cakes here and there for special people, and don't have that going anymore. We were also blessed at that time to be working with Idaho Health & Welfare-Child Protection Services as Foster Parents. "The hardest job you'll ever love". That went on for 11 years, with a total of 39 foster children being in our home for up to 6 months once. Then the greatest gift of all, and I know this was the reason we were still in Pocatello; In 1999 we got our son, Kristopher James, as a newborn and were able to adopt him and have him sealed to our eternal family March 2001. He came with the exact name we had always said we would name our first son, and there were so many other special experiences surrounding that whole occasion - without a doubt, Kris was meant to come and be a member of our family. Jim took the Concord University online Law School classes, and graduated in March, 2008. We went to LA for the graduation with our eldest and youngest, and then went to Disneyland! He is such a hard worker and great provider! Jim and I have been married 31 1/2 wonderful years now, and have six great children - five beautiful daughters, and one 10 year old son. Three daughters are now married, and we are happily the grandparents of 4 yr. old Jackson, and his little sister Kayli who is 2. Baby #3 will arrive in November. Jim is still working for Prudential, with his office in our home, and I am not working outside the home now.
