Greg's Story

I left Washington High School (in Washington, CT) in 1963, moved to CA and graduated from Analy High School (Sebastopol, CA) in 1966. After graduation, I spent one year at Santa Rosa JC, then 4 years in the Air Force (air traffic controller), then 5 more years of college - BA Geography, plus teaching credentials from Sonoma State University. I tried teaching and didn't like it. Tried a lot of jobs and didn't find anything that I really enjoyed doing. In 2005 I retired from a cell to cell ministry at San Quentin Prison - the only job I ever had that I absolutely loved. I couldn’t wait to get to the prison in the morning. I love Arizona, but I really miss going to the prison. I wish there was a similar institution near our home here in Arizona. I would volunteer to go through the gates in a heart beat. I have a son who lives in California.. I miss seeing him, but fortunately we live in a world of computers and telephones. Since my wife and I retired to AZ, I spend some of my time traveling around the Southwest with friends looking at the sites, learning about the area, and hunting and collecting petrified wood and fossils...a lot of fun. I also collect meteorites. When a brand new meteorite falls, no matter where on earth, there are professional meteorite hunters who immediately jump on a plane and head out to hunt for it. I know a few of them. I buy my meteorites from them. I love getting one that just fell. When I hold it in my hands, I know that what I’m holding was in deep space just a few days earlier. I have one of the stones that fell over Chelyabinsk Russia on February 15th, 2013. The meteor exploded in our atmosphere and created a sonic boom that broke thousands of windows and knocked down doors. Thousands of pieces of meteorite rained down on the earth that day. I have one of those pieces. If you do a Google search of that event, you’ll find videos taken by Russian citizens showing the smoke trail left by the meteor and you can ...Expand for more
hear the sonic booms. Fascinating stuff. My favorite places to visit in AZ are Sedona, Meteor Crater, Tucson, Tombstone, the Superstition Mountains, and my absolute favorite place is the Grand Canyon. Living in Arizona seems to fit me. A lot of people find the desert to be too lonely. I like that aspect of the desert. I find it to be kind of "spiritual". After a day of hiking across it, I find myself more calm and clear headed. ———————————————————— (9/30/2022). There are things in my life that I regret doing, or not doing. Back in the 1970’s I was learning to hang glide. I had just about completed all my training when I crashed my glider. I thought I broke my back. Turns out it was just badly bruised. I told myself that I would pick up where I left off once I was healed. I never did. I now have friends who jump off a mountain very near where I live. They then glide for 40, 50, 60, or 70 miles. They take videos of their entire flights and post them on YouTube. I REALLY regret not sticking with the hang gliding. ————————————————————- (10/1/2022) People here on Classmates say what TV programs they like, so I thought I’d mention how much I enjoy watching, “On Patrol: Live”. I’m watching it right now as a matter of fact. Good show. I also enjoy watching a series called, “The Good Doctor”. I just found it……only watched a couple episodes. Lastly, I really like, “Yellowstone”. It is a dark series, filled with violence and bad language, but it has excellent scripts, excellent acting, and excellent directing. As a Christian, I can’t defend watching it, but I do. It does teach some good values that are missing in today’s society. So, for the time being I’ll continue to watch, but I may change my mind on that. —————————————————— “As the light changed from red to green to yellow and back to red again, I sat there thinking about life. Was it nothing more than a bunch of honking and yelling? Sometimes it seemed that way.” (Jack Handey)
