Greg's Story

Well, my story let's see... I am living in north suburban Chicago and have been living here since 1980. I have been married since then as well and we have three kids, although with one working in Milwaukee (He is a radio deejay) and two in college, we are pretty much empty nesters. My younger son is a senior at Indiana and my daughter is studying in Japan. So for now, it's me, my wife and the three-legged dog we got from the shelter. I have been an attorney since 1981 and before finishing my education I was in the US Army for two years. I started out as your basic "downtown" attorney, serving as an Assistant Cook County State's Attorney and doing some time in a law firm on LaSalle Street. I have been a solo practitioner since 1991. I have always been involved in sports somehow and that has taken me from football to hockey to biking, roller blading, running (then walking) and now its golf. When I turned 40 I declared that I would go back to playing hockey. I played until I was 47. For 9 years I either coached or ran the hockey program at Robert Crown Sports Complex and ran the summer Camp and taught skating. I absolutely loved working with kids (sometimes the parents not so much). For a while there I thought I had missed my calling and should have been a teacher or a coach. But I like practicing law as well so it's fine. When I left coaching I spent a number of years as a Boy Scout Leader and still have my hand in it from time to time. That led to my participating in two two-week "High Adventure Treks", backpacking in the Sangre de Cristo mountains at Philmont Scout Ranch. The first time I learned the joys of altitude sickness. Fun. Glad they have pills for that. In 2007 and 2008, I was Commander of the local American Legion Post (having served in the Vietnam era) and am still active in the American Legion. Since 2002, my free time has been built around golf. I practice it, exercise for it, take lessons to improve, practice some more and sometimes even play. After seven years of doing that, I have been fortunate to finally have broken 80 this season (2009). ...Expand for more
I know it's just a hobby but I have always have had the habit on focusing on things. It's just me. I am not sure I could crystalize life into a few lines since we were all at SMPH. Through it all the basis of faith and family have been at the center. Like you, I am sure, there have been ups and downs. That's life. But I do know I wake up every day hoping and praying to be the best person I can possibly be. In my case, that has taken a little effort...well more than a little. In the past 56 years I have kept my Guardian Angel very, very busy. As a family update, you all may recall I grew up on 32nd Street. I grew up there with my three sisters: Celine (Brogan), Mary (Boruta) and Dina (Ayala). Sorry to say Celine passed in 2007. The rest of us are alive and kickin'. I think of everyone from those school days very fondly. I can't tell you how many times I tried to teach my kids something about how to live life by drawing on our lives and experiences at SMPH or at DLS. If I had to do it all over again, at least I know I would be doing it with a lot of really great people (and some real characters of note too). I hope you are all well. I hope we can all meet up again someday. It would be a hoot. And God rest the souls of Ramona Krakowski, Billy Kask and Dennis Woods (and anyone else I don't know about). I just added DLS on to this as well. DLS was a great school for me and I am proud to be a graduate. I was also fortunate to have played on that 9-0 football team in 1968. DLS also gave me the opportunity to interact with all sorts of different people who were not in my little world on 32nd and Troop. Through DLS and through DLS sports, I learned about myself and what I was capable of if I really tried. It helped through the military, through law school and a lot of life's challenges. DLS gave a lot to me and I am grateful for the experinces and the people I knew there. Also, A WHOLE BUNCH OF SMPH PEOPLE ARE ON FACEBOOK! Look for a group called "St, Mary of Perpetual Help Class on 1967". Oics, a lot of commentary and a lot of laughs Take care Greg
