Gregory's Story
Life
Oh man...where to start?
After graduation I entered UNLV and got into theatre management with Syufy. I did that for about three years while I finished my A.A.S. in Paralegal Studies at CCCC, in 1988.
1989-1993 I was at Winona State University (Minnesota). I was a chapter founder for our TKE chapter there. I was in student government at the school and State University System level. I was also really active politically, serving as a campaign coordinator and member of the Young Democratic-Farmer-Labor (MN's Democratic Party) State Central Committee. I graduated in 1993 with a B.S. in Pre-Law (Paralegal Studies) and a Sociology minor.
I HAD planned on going to law school, but got side-tracked. I spent two years at St. Patrick's Seminary and Theologate, studing for the Roman Catholic priesthood. What can I say? Some things--the students, the liturgy, the sense of community--were great! On the other hand, the formation program was a grade-A mind-f*ck. Those are the kindest words I can find. :)
I started teaching with the Clark County School District in November, 1995, first as a sub, then full-time. My first two and a half years I taught English. Since semester break, 1999-2000, I've been teaching in my major area: social studies. I love history and I love teaching, so this is heaven for me! In July 2001, I was one of twenty-five teachers nationally selected for a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Teachers Institute on the American West, at the University of Colorado. 03, I "wrote the course" for the district's A.P. European History and taught it for the first time during the 2003-2004 school year. For the 2007-2008 school year, I taught three World History, two World History-Honors, and an AP World History--AP European History was shelved. I was very frustrated over that administrative decision, but teaching AP World History was an unexpected joy.
After ten very fruitful, productive years helping build the best high school social studies department in Nevada, I left Palo Verde High School to become, in essence, the entire Social Studies Department at College of Southern Nevada High School-South, formerly CCHS-South. I'd started my full-time teaching career teaching English in that program, but on the West campus. It's the smallest of the three campuses, with only ca. 115 students. I'm really enjoying working with those kids and trying to build social studies into a strong department.
I FINALLY finished my M.A. in Medieval European History. I'll be doing some adjunct teaching work for Regis University beginning in 2008-2009. A fringe benefit of teaching for Regis is that they will waive tuition on an additional M.A. I'll probably do my second M.A., then, in either Classical European History or Renaissance and Reformation.
I got sober on January 2nd, 1997. It was a great decision for me. I'm a Friend of Bill W, but I'm not preachy about it. I like getting out into the desert or down by the river, gaming, reading history, and catching a Wranglers or 51's game.
