GWEN's Story

After highschool, I went to Dalhousie University 67 - 70 and got a BSc. I married at 21 ( 1970) and my husband, Glenn Smith, finished his law degree in 1974. Just like the movie Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005). We were Mr & Mrs. Smith ( 1974) ( go see the movie) I had worked as a lab technician at the Clinical Chemistry Lab in Halifax. during our marriage, until I had my first child, Jonathan, born in 1973. ( now 39). I had to use that Science Degree , didn't i?? In 1974 we set off for Toronto where Glenn was doing his one year mandatory articling with a Law Firm. I took a job working in a blood lab in the evenings. Unfortunately, due to our youth., his career and just plain marriage breakdown, our marriage dissolved and I left Toronto, baby in tow, - and moved to Winnipeg. ( 1975). ( Don't ask me why Winnipeg - it couldn't have been for the weather!! This move left me struggling as a single mum to keep food on the table, clothes on our backs - my priority being diapers - and just be able to live. ( and go to the occasional night club). I took a temporary job in a lab doing research, You have to love those little itty bitty mice.... NOT!! when the position ended I found a job as a waitress in a steak and lobster restaurant. ..Diaper's are important and most essential. This job actually turned out to be fun. I discovered I had a talent working with people and that I was very outgoing and at ease with everyone I met. - and my goodness - with my BSC degree I could remember what everyone ordered without having to write it down. That's using my mathematical and analytical skills!! Eventually I thought that perhaps I should go back to University and add on to my degree. How about teaching?? So, back I went to the University of Manitoba in 1976, to get a teaching certificate.. In the fall of 1976, I met Frank Savoie , a television producer with the French CBC network and we actually married about 10 months later in 1977. This union produced another 2 boys. Marc & Chris. Marc is now 33 and owns editing studios ( television and film) in Moncton& Halifax. Chris(30) is a computer gaming engineer and works for Ubisoft in Sweden ( was in Montreal)l designing games such as Prince of Persia. Jonathan is a professional photographer living in Japan ( He had to pick up something from his mum, yes?) Frank & I lived in Winnipg until 1983. I missed the Maritimes and he loved the Maritimes too... Winnipeg's 40 below in the winter is PRETTY COLD. Try ice skating on ponds!! So off we moved to Riverview, NB, being able to enjoy skating on the lakes AND skiing without freezing!! The cars tires were no longer square! In NB I discovered a new career. I had developed am outgoing personality and was very much at ease with people in any situation. My next and last career involved sales in Speciality Advertising.. For the next 15 years I was at my happiest in this career choice but retired in 2002. Now I had time to concentrate on my hobbies and other passions in life. PH...Expand for more
OTOGRAPHY. has always been a part of my life. My mother was an excellent photographer and she took pictures daily. It is because of her logging of so many pictures, I can look back in photos to the day I was born and recall so many events in my life. Events that would have been long erased from my memory. I followed her practice and I swear, there must not be a day that has gone by that I haven't captured something on the camera. I thow my camera over my shouder and it just becomes a part of my appendages. Now - keeping them all in logical fileson my computer to retrieve easily is a different challenge. I would be most grateful if anyone can send me some suggestions!!! TRAVELLING: I just can't sit still long. There are so many wonderful places to see and cultures to explore. I have been to many countries all over the world and I still have many more to visit. On my bucket list is Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Scotland, Indonesia and more countries in south america. in 2007 I asked my self what was keeping me in Canada - 8 weeks of summer and a long winter.? Am I crazy.? In 2007 I just upped and moved to Panama, Central America. I sold all possessions in Canada - put my "impossible to get rid of" things in storage and off I went. I forgot to mention that my marriage to Frank dissolved in 2004 and we were granted a divorce as of 2007 - I'm not doing too bad. Eliz Taylor had 7 marriages and I'm only at 2. No pity please. I'm happy as a clam now. . SPANISH: They say if you keep your brain active you won't develop Alzheimers. Naturally being somewhat skiddish about placing my iron in the freezer or asking the same questions 100 times, I thought it would be a good choice to get the brain greased and fine tuned and started studying Spanish. Why Spanish - because I live in a Spanish speaking country. We managed to learn French in School and do you remember Latin in grade 9..........?? almost as useful as trig & calculus. I live in a Spanish speaking country and I have ample opportunity to use it everyday. It is difficult to find anyone who can speak English actually. Just for the adventure, I studied Spanish in Peru for a month in Oct, 2009 and in 2010 I went to Argentina for 7 weeks and studied Spanish and had a wonderful time in Buenos Aires. A home stay , all meals and Spanish classes 5 days a week only runs me about $1200. What does that get me in Canada - my prescriptions??? ( should we start a blog on the joys of aging??) We have all changed since our school days. We all have stories to share. I would love to hear these stories from each and every one.of you. Keep in contact and if you ever want to come to Panama I would be delighted to put you up and show you around or point you in the right direction. Look up Boquete on the internet. That's where I live. I usually come back to Nova Scotia and spend 2 months at the family cottage near Tatamagouche. Would love to get together with old friends and classmates. Hasta luego. .
