H.'s Story

LIFE--- Grew up outside Reedsport, Oregon, a great place overlooking the sand dunes & ocean. We had goats, chickens, a big pinto Welsh/logging pony, motorcycles and a lot of dogs. Both parents worked. Mom & all the grandma's and aunties were schoolteachers and working-moms. It made for very educational summers with tidepooling and watching grandma raise bullfrog tadpoles and huge green caterpillars that grew into 5" moths. The area is crammed with many state parks, and we walked on the dunes a lot, back when it was safe, gorgeous & peaceful. You could sit next to the crystal clear streams in the valleys between the dunes & watch the deer & birds wander amidst wildflowers. (Now it's hazy, crazy & grimy with all the drunks & ATVs tearing up the place.) Went to Reedsport High, took lots of bio and photography, loved being in the plays. We dressed our dog up as a pink toy stuffed pig in "You Can't Take It With You", and nobody knew he was alive until the firecrackers went off. He went berzerk, the crowd went silent, then insane. Went to Southwestern Oregon Community College, studied photography, geology, marine biology and computers. Went to OSU for a short time, took Japanese and computers. (Didn't really enjoy OSU, it was very large, intimidating, NOT at all what I was expecting from OSU stories I grew up with from Grandma, aunties, Mom.) Went to University of Portland, took more Japanese and lots of science, Animal Behavior at the Zoo! (4-months, COLD! The baby elephant acted so human. Elephants are so intelligent.) Went to work as a techwriter at Intel, then started consulting, ended up at Enron Broadband, learned a lot, worked very hard, lots & lots of overtime, no vacations, lost $$, and am back consulting. I live in Forest Grove, OR, with BF, 3 dogs, 2 cats. Still trying to do art. Want to take pastel painting next. I really enjoy my friends and going to art events, movies, fun restaurants and taking art classes. I am currently working in hightech, doing a lot of contracting. I can be found mostly online, FB, some Myspace. SCHOOL--- In school, I think I was quiet and rather timid, which made school rather unpleasant. Kids are like wolves. If I had it to do over again, I'd do a lot different. MIDDLESCHOOL: Total Geek: a 12-year-old who belonged to National Orchid society, was raising phalenopsis orchids and oriental-hybrid lilies. Loved Star Trek, Adams Family, and Beverly Hillbillies shows, and had the entire series of Star Trek books. I was in Chicken, Goat, Dog 4-H educational programs. Did 4-H competitions for about 3 years, with my sisters & Alice A. & Daren W. Alice & I hung out quite a bit hiking and target practice. I also was good friends with Laura B. and Sandy L. Laura and I would walk around town selling Girl Scout cookies--back when young girls could roam miles from home door-to-door. We hit one trailer in Lakeside, and it was rocking off it's foundation, but we kept knocking and finally a man answers the door pulling on a bathrobe. (Who takes a shower in the afternoon?) He bought some cookies, and a lady was yelling for him to hurry up. Laura and I also delivered newspapers, and loaded down the bikes pretty heavy with the Sunday papers. I remember hitting one classmate's frontdoor accidentally with the Sunday, sounded like a rifleshot, we pedaled as fast we could with the heavy loads to get outa there. Highschool: Being shy, I didn't like highschool much-- I "remember" myself as quite hideous, but looking back at the pictures, they look fine and normal. If I had that to do over, it'd be different, probably be totally goth, rollerderby girl. I did enjoy my highschool friends quite a bit: Laura, Sandy, Jennifer...school would've been a lot tougher without them. Our Biology classes with Mr. Neal were wonderful, and then the to...Expand for more
rtures we'd put the teachers through in Sex-Ed. Note that the Sex-Ed class back then was completely non-informational. Dear Abby and economics books had more educational material. Mr. Knudsen, our photography teacher was very funny& a character. He'd threaten to cut our fingers off if we misbehaved or ruined the photo paper. They used to supply photopaper, it's very expensive, as well as the equipment and chemicals. Photography and all the classmates were really cool, it was very creative having the other people around, going off on photo-missions and doing contests. Mr. Deardorf, our social studies teacher, was wonderful and had a huge effect on all of us, especially with critical thinking, and looking at the data quality people base their grand pronouncements on. COLLEGE--- I went on to go to SWOCC for 3 years, taking mostly computer science, geology (my favorite) and photography. Going to a commuter-school was very isolating--if only I had known what living on campus at University of Portland was like, much more pleasant. Finished up at University of Portland--MUCH better. I enjoyed this university the most. The staff were very sincere, and serious about getting you through it. It was the Best time of my life. I moved out of a situation, moved to campus, lived in a co-ed dorm, 3-good-meals a day at the cafeteria...I was in heaven. Teachers were VERY demanding. We studied & and had a lot of fun with the Hawaiian students. Due to that combo, we got really run-down and were sick a LOT. I'd never met a priest before, and really enjoyed them. They were extremely funny, nice and supportive. I also enjoyed the (required) courses in philosophy and World religions, which turns out to very useful now, and would really recommend it. People complain about cafeteria food, but I loved it. Being on your own, working 1-2 jobs, and going to school full-time makes it very hard to shop & cook. It was wonderful to just show up, grab some healthy food and eat with friends. (Except with certain friends, you had to cover your food constantly and take it with you if you needed to get something, as "somebody" would ruin it, they'd sit and watch you slowly realize the prank.) I'd take painting classes from Michael Dente, a wonderful guy, he was so supportive. People would come there just for "art-therapy". I would get so stressed out, and doing some painting there would do something, and then studying was a lot easier. My best roommate was DeeDee Schiermeister. We were best pals. Don't know what happened to her, she was in Roseburg last I heard. Other people I really enjoyed: Wally & Joe Wolfkiel, Lori Blackwell, Kyle Selkirk, Collin Charboneau, Jo-Jo Pacquin Loiselle, Sonia Fiesta, Kimo, Roman Rillera, Scott Nelson, Tim Slaughter, Diane Phelps Slaughter, Paula Estoup Webb, and more.. I still hear from Jo-Jo (Jocelyn) Pacquin Loiselle, Tim & Diane (Feltz/Phelps) Slaughter, Paula Estoup, Joe Wolfkiel. I wished I'd delayed graduation, gotten a masters or another degree, it was a wonderful existence. WORK-WORLD--- I enjoy working with people, especially funny ones. I LOVE working with intelligent types that aren't hung up on appearances or status. Started in hightech, and it's been a continuous rat-race since. I've now been contracting since 1991, working as a content developer, technical writer, web developer, etc. (Techwriters create information in a VERY concise, easy-to-understand style. I create online or paper, in any format, catalog, manual or brochure you might need. Ex: online training for new workers, User Guides for products, Sales Demos.) It has not been easy and there's been a lot of industry booms & busts. I've worked for Intel, Mentor Graphics, Synopsis, Rational, HP, Enron Broadband, Tektronix, PCB123, Oregon Catholic Press...
