Hal's Story

Life Born April 7, 1945, in Salt Lake City, UT. Moved to Kansas City, MO, in 1946 and to Valparaiso, IN, in 1951. Graduated Valpo High in 1963. College degrees in 1967 (Carleton College, BA Math) & 1969 (Purdue, MS CS), staying on 5 years working on unfinished PhD & as part-time CS instructor. Grad student in Applied Math at Brown 1967-68, falling in love with Computer Sciences and having to trasfer to Purdue. Married fellow Purdue CS grad student Ruth Mazur in 1969. We still look back on those near-impoverished years as among "the best years of our life." Worked 1974-2005 (2 years in Dayton, OH, 29 in Redondo Beach, CA) as Computer Scientist/Software Engineer for TRW (acquired by Northrop-Grumman in 2002), evolving into a "Software Process Engineer" -- an always-interesting, always-changing career of technology entrepenourship, approx. 200 travel boondoggles (about 10 to Eur. in the 1990's), terms as Chair & other posts in internat. professional societies, training, ... Had daughters Erika in 1978 (Brown, CS, 2001 -- falling in love with CS in 1997 from same man who turned me on exactly 30 years earlier, Andy van Dam) and Alison in 1981 (WashU St.L, Bio, 2004). Along the way we saw Zola Budd trip Mary Decker right in front of us & Sebastian Cole finger the skeptical press in winning the 1500 in 1984, Singin Smith redeem himself in 1996 on the way to Beach Volleyball's first bronze behind Karch's gold, a...Expand for more
nd the great Canadian/Russian pairs skating controversy & Johnny Mosley do the first Dinner Roll in 2002 among many Olympics memories we attended. Saw all the tennis greats of the last 3 decades play. Attended sporatic Rose Bowls, Lakers & Clippers & Kings & Angels & Raiders (when they were in LA) games. Still root for my Chicago White Sox, even though I know hardly any of their names. Regular season subscribers to the Mark Taper Forum & the Ahmanson -- or else we probably wouldn't get any culture (unless you call Simon & Garfunkle, Peter/Paul&Mary, Kingston Trio, Dion, Don McLean, etc. "culture"). Used to play bridge, but haven't had friends that do so in decades, so... Bought first house we looked at in 1976 (expect it to be first & only we ever own) with tiny ocean view in Hollywood Riviera section of Torrance, CA; 1 marriage 36 years so far; have thrown same St. Hart's Day party (Sat. nearest Feb.14) for XXXVII straight years (announced our engagement to grad school friends at St.H Day I); 1 company softball team ("Grunion'77") for 28 years; 39 straight years giving to Carleton College; and liberal Democrat since "conversion" frosh year of college. Retired March 1, 2005, to golf, travel, & Habitat for Humanity construction work/crew leading, + ~50 other Things to Do Before I Die. Golf game has not gotten any better yet. Still play slow-pitch softball too, but wheels are shot (knee replacement in 2002).

Long-time good friend Steve Groff joined our golf five-some (Walt Maki, Scott Ninegar, Don Bell, me) at Los Verdes this morning for his first round in about 5 years. The image shows how he celebrated his return to the game.
