Harold Francis's Story

Life I relocated to Tampa, Florida in 1990. I was thirty thousand dollars in debt. I did not file for bankruptcy as I did not want to taint my securities license. I struggled with a store that I started with a partner in 1989, until my brother died from a auto accident in 1991. Up until that time, I worked 18 hours a day, seven days a week. I closed the store 15 days after returning from my brother's funeral. That was three years of my money down a money pit. Since 1991, I worked at the post office part-time. On the side, I sold life and health insurance. IDS Financial, a division of American Express, offered me the opportunity to become a financial adviser. The salary was $18k for one year. After that time, salary would be strictly on a commission basis. The catch was that I had to go to classes to obtain additional licenses for 30 days without any pay. After sitting in their classes for three days, not making enough money from my rented Yellow Cab that sat idle in the parking lot, I let that future opportunity go. I let my life and health licenses and my brokerage license expire. As much as I wanted to excel in sales, it eluded me. Time was not on my side. At the time I moved to Florida, jobs were not paying much. I was earning over $39k in 1990. The comparable job working in the Court system in Florida was $18k. But, I would have had to take a $14k position to promote to that fantastic salary. So, I rented a Yellow Cab weekly, made a decent living, and made my own hours until 1993. In 1993, I began to work regularly at the post office. I bought a brand new house in 1999 in which I still live today. I have written two full featured screenplays and one short screen play since 2000. It is an incredible challenge to sell a screenplay. But, I and my writing partner continue the attempts. We have had nibbles, but no takers as yet. In 2006, I have collaborated with a singer to put out a CD. As of November 2007, eight songs that I have composed were complete with a lot of personal financing. The CD is Now available and you can listen to Full versions of the songs by going to MusicSubmit.com/SamuelBullock and follow the links there to hear the rest of the Full version of songs on the SamuelBullock.com website. I perform as a keyboard player with a jazz band and the singer with whom I have composed music. Looking ahead, if I can get my tax bills out of the way, life should be sweet. Since I first wrote my story here, I was informed on June 30, 2008 by the IRS that I can expect to receive a Tax Levy on wages. At present I owe $17,000 for 2004 mainly as a result of a pension hardship distribution of untaxed income that gets added to your gross income and thereby pushing a tax payer into a higher tax bracket. My tax problems are the result of a computer virus that wiped out my compiled records. The IRS does not care about the time it takes to compile thousands of receipts and reconcile over $100,000 in stock transactions. Do not let those numbers fool you. I had losses. But, the IRS looks at proceeds coming from stock sales as income. The tax payer, not the stock brokerage firm, has to do the dirty work of breaking down the stock transactions into losses and gains. This endeavor alone required me to go back as far as 1996 to retrieve purchase dates of stocks and their sale dates. (Since the IRS is not interested in my sad story, I am telling it here.) I am just an average hard working guy who has a lot of little income coming in from anywhere I can get it. I cannot afford to hire someone to do my bookkeeping. Therefore, it has to be done as best as I can get it done between work and sleep. So, I am spending the July 4, 2008 day and weekend doing data entry using double backup of my records to get my returns done. In going over my records and trying to rush to get my returns done by the IRS deadlines, I have come across lost deductions that could have lessened the amount I currently owe. I am not going to let that happen again and will gather all of my deductions while the tax levy is in place. I am looking forward to post a happy ending to my IRS saga. I live with my wife of 33-plus years. We share our home with our grown daughter who suffers from Multiple Sclerosis. Tax Update: November 30, 2008. All tax returns are filed and up-to-date. Spending $4000 to the tax representative. I owe $33,000 to Uncle Sam. So far this year, Uncle Sam is withholding over $10,000 from my wages alone. It will be over $11,000 by year's end. In addition to that, I am paying $258 bi-weekly to the IRS. My hope is that my tax representative will negotiate a settlement to decrease my tax bill. April 26, 2009 update: The IRS owes me over $3700 for the 2008 tax year. Yahoooooo! That's less than one tenth of what I owe them! Hopefully, They will owe me more for the current tax year. Tax levy was lifted. Waiting for the next shoe to drop. April 14, 2010 update: The IRS owes me over $5,000. Tax bill is going down. Paying a tax levy each week. I made over $12,000 less than last year. Losing pay at my job beginning April 24, 2010. Lost income from the post office alone amounts to $386 net income bi-weekly. I am glad that I still have a job notwithstanding lower pay due to lower mail volumes. I will be performing as a piano player for Bobby Hendricks, the last surviving member of The Drifters, and Samuel Bullock on May 21 and June 5, 2010 at the Buckhorn Golf & Country Club in Valrico, Florida. 2011: Performed with Lester Freeman who recorded "Some Kind Of Wonderful" which was hit back in the 1960's. 2012: Recorded Video with Samuel Bullock whose video catalog is free to view at SamuelBullock.com. School I was in the band with Wayne Cobham. I played trumpet until Albert (forgot last nam...Expand for more
e), who played baritone horn, graduated in 1967-8. I played baritone horn until I graduated in January 1969. If you graduated then, I played the solo "If I Loved You" from Carousel. Music still plays an important role in my life. College I attended the following institutions of higher learning: Queensborough Community College 1970 Kingsborough Community College 1970-1971 - Reported the news at the school's radio station Empire State College for Labor Studies 1979 York College 1981? Longman Financial Institute 1989 Hillsborough Community College 1993? Insurance School 1992 Workplace Since high school, I went to five colleges, a financial institute, and insurance school. In 1974, I have worked in a stock room for 30 days. Got offered a position with the company, The American Arbitration Association, as a commercial tribunal administrator of textile disputes. Made a lateral move to labor tribunal administrator of disputes in the entertainment industry on the east coast. The famous cases I handled were with Muhammed Ali, Patrick O'Neal, and Zsa Zsa Gabor, and Steve Reeves. I got promoted to Editor of The New York No-Fault Arbitration Reports. I left the company in 1984. In 1984, I worked for the Civil Court of New York as a Court Assistant with peace officer status issuing warrants to Marshals for evictions within New York City. I got promoted to Senior Court Clerk with peace office status and was assigned to a judge until I left New York in January 1990 to move to Tampa, Florida. Before leaving New York, I obtained a Registered Representative License as a stockbroker. Two months after I arrived in Florida, the brokerage firm that was interested in me went out of business. I went to another brokerage firm that was in business since 1946. It went out of business six months after arriving in Florida. I eventually went to work for the post office, a place that I resigned from in 1971. I am still there. Notwithstanding all of the above, I had an electronics repair business in the 70's, a stationery store in Florida from 1989 until 1991. I drove taxi, sold life and health insurance, worked in my store, and at the post office while trying to survive the recession of the early 1990's which caused the stock market and brokerage failures. Although the Court system held my former job for one year, I was determined not to go back to New York. My New York mindset made me determined that I could make it. Since 2000, I have written screenplays, music, and operate many websites including a legal forms download site. I also operate a commercial wireless access point where I live and perform extensive computer and network repair for acquaintances and coworkers. I no longer perform repair work or troubleshooting for the public at large. It's true that I am a jack of all trades and master of none. I love the variety of my life. Like a farmer, I keep planting for my future successes. Unfortunately, failure sometimes hitches a ride into my life. Today Jan 4, 2014: taxes under control. Tax refunds have eroded my debt to the Tax man. Tomorrow is my 37th wedding anniversary. Traveling all over Florida as a piano performer with Samuel Bullock and The Soul Alliance Band. Other than the foregoing, life is good! I own over 14 domain names and have a very active internet presence. Still working at the post office and hope to retire in two years, if I live that long. May 17, 2015 update: I own less than $2400 in back taxes. Yesterday, I performed as a piano player at The Ultimate Motown Show ans dinner dance in Tampa, Florida at the Son's of Italy lodge for about 200 attendees. Still gigging at age 64. I will turn 65 this coming June 2015. I intend to retire next year June.My wife is retiring at the end of May 2015. I have started trading stocks again (I am a former stockbroker) to enhance my monthly income, especially in light of my wife's retirement plans. Update August 13, 2017: I started collecting full social security retirement benefits in June 2016 at 66 years old. I am still working at the post office delivering mail and do not see retiring in sight. I am in pretty good health after a bout with Ketoacidosis in April 2016 spending 22 days in the hospital. I had to relearn how to walk. I was determined that I would recover. I went back to work as a supervisor which helped since my feet hurt badly from the illness. I am not taking medication except for controlling my hypertension. I do not want to have a stroke and have someone like my wife to have to change my diaper! I am not performing music as a piano player. I actually got bored with it. I started a business this year, ProlineMediaGroup.com, and produce commercials for websites and local businesses. It grew out from whiteboard advertising that gave me a taste of working with video creations. I can produce human spokespersons or 3-dimention avatars that can deliver human voice video marketing messages in 24 languages. I enjoy this activity very much. I own over 16 websites and look forward to increasing sales. No more tax problems. In fact, the IRS owes me for over payments and they are not in a hurry to send me a check as quickly as they wanted payments from me. April 30,2021 update: Enjoying retirement from post office. My wife of 44 years has dementia. Except for being delusional and not remembering anything she’s doing moment to moment, she is functional washing, cleaning, and personal care. I have home attendants giving her some companionship and assistance two days each week. I stopped performing as a piano player in 2017. Got tired of playing dance music. I busy myself with many online businesses producing video commercials for marketing products and services through my company Proline Media Group.

April 9, 2018 picture of me strapped in a postal delivery vehicle just for everyone who do not know what I look like currently and for friends and coworkers who have not seen me in years, but are my FB friends.
I am temporarily supervising again at the Post Office to help out the manager. As many of you ex-postal workers know, supervising is not my career path. But, I am doing it to help out a manager who has been fair to me.

I want to thank my sibling, Chev Bowens, for putting my high school pictures online. Here is what I looked like at 18 years old.
Here is a picture of me in 1975 when future wifey and I went to take pictures for the wedding invitations. I was 24 then going on 25.

Deanna Dellacioppa sang "If I don't have you." My wish is that she can find someone like Clive Davis to find the songs that were written for Whitney to make her shine in her own uniqueness.
While I did have a telephoto lens, the lighting was inadequate to do more justice to the moment.
I was able to get a solitary picture of Fernando Varela during an autographing session after the show.
