Harold's Story

Life Entered Army for 3 years after graduation from High School. Then attended University of Michigan and graduated from there with a BS in Electrical Engineering. Started at Bendix Corp after graduation and after 2 years there went to Chrysler Corp. Retired from Chrysler Corp in 1988 as a Program Manager after 33 years service in various electrical design engineering assignments in Sterling Township, MI, New Orleans, LA and Huntsville, AL. Current interests are boating, fishing, beekeeping and traveling. Military Entered the Army in Oct 1945. The plan was to enlist for three years and receive a four year college education in return after discharge. I initially went to Camp Crowder, MO, for basic training followed by Signal Corp School. After completing the basic training and school, I was transferred to Fort Monmouth, NJ, for advanced Signal Corp schooling. Upon completion of that in the fall of 1946, I was assigned to the Signal Corp School in Ansbach, Germany as an Instructor. I liked that! The Instructors were treated as commissioned officers, we had our own mess with waiters and etc. Really Cool. But after a couple of months there, I decided that I needed to get in the field and practice my trade. So I was assigned to Vienna, Austria to help maintain the U.S. Army telephone and teletype lines throughout Austria. For this purpose, Austria was sectioned off in three districts, sort of like a triangle, and the main cities were Vienna, Salzburg and Lin...Expand for more
z. I ended up serving in all three cities at one time or another as well as some time in Italy. I left in 1948 when my service time was up. One of the main objectives of our communication lines was to provide security for the train loads of food arriving by ships in Italy from the United States under the Marshall Plan and distributed throughout Europe. For months after I got home, I received many letters from grateful folks that had benefited from the food in the form of CARE packages distributed under the Marshall Plan. After I returned from the service in Oct 1948, I enrolled at Port Huron Junior College in January 1949 and began my work toward a degree in Electrical Engineering. In the Fall of 1950, I transferred to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and completed my college work and received a BS degree in Electrical Engineering plus a few advanced courses to supplement my training in my chosen field. After College It was a great career, during the best of times of the Greatest Generation. We went from electronic vacuum tubes to transistors to integrated circuits and finally to microcircuits and computers. I was blessed to have been able to participate and contribute in this tremendous advance in technology. There was seldom a day that I didn't anticipate going to work to solve problems and create solutions in this challenging electrical engineering environment. I gave it my best and it passed so quickly. Retirement Still working on this part...
