Harold's Story

After graduation from High School, I attended Vanderbilt University and graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1968. Then I went to work for Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) in Tullahoma, TN at the Arnold Air Force base. I started out as an Instrumetation Engineer but eventually became a Principal Controls Engineer. I was responsible for designing the closed loop control systems and safety monitoring/shutdown systems that were used to position the test models in the wind tunnel (axial, horizontal, vertical, pitch, yaw, & roll). I worked at AEDC for 33 years with a one year break in the middle when I left AEDC to work at DuPont chemical for a year. I retired from AEDC when I was 56 years old. I still live in Tullahoma, TN. After graduation from college,my best friend (Russell Kitchell), was killed in a motorcycle accident. We attended Vanderbilt together and carpooled to the campus during the four years that we went there. I am married (wife Rebecca) and have one daughter (Danielle). My daughter and her husband live with us. They have two children, one is 7 yers old and the other is 4 year old, i.e. I have 2 grand children. My son-in-llaw got laid off from his job as a mechanic at a local GM/Chevy dealership due to lack of work. It seems this economy is keeping people from repairing & maintaining there cars like they should. My son-in-law now works part time at a motorcycle repair shop and for a guy who does Barett Jackson like paint jobs on cars. He also has plans to start up a wrecker business. My interest are watching TV, internet surfing, swimming, motorcycle riding, target shooting, traveling, playing with the grand children and working on cars. I like working on old BMW cars and I have a 1948 Ford pickup truck that I am planing on fixing up. I also have a 1963 Mercury Comet Convertible that I also plan on fixing up and/or restoring. I also have a couple of VW TDI diesels that I enjoy working on and I even have the VAGCOM software for repair & troulbeshooting VW cars. These TDI diesel get almost 50 MPG on the highway and my wife gets almost 40 MPG driving around town. I enjoy swimming and we had a swimming pool, but we have had a major problem to occur and the whole thing needs to be completely redone. Trying to get some extra money together to repair it. We will not be fixing up the pool since we will be moving to a new house very soon. I have be...Expand for more
en so busy with my other hobbies and other things so I sold my BMW touring motorcycle. Lack of time and no one to ride with.. I still have my 1982 Honda Hawk CB450T motorcycle though, so I can still ride some and take those short rides. I enjoy traveling, but my wife works full time as a school teacher so we don't seem to have the time to do as much of it as we would like to. I enjoy visiting the western states e.g. Colorada, Nevada, Utah, etc. and I have ridden a dirt bike (motorcycle) in the Rocky Mountain in the area of Marble Colorado (near Glenwood Springs). The scenery out there is fantastic. I would like to visit Yosemite National park someday. I have also been on a nine day float trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. That was quite a trip. My wife and I have also been to Hawaii twice and we loved it. Going to Hawaii was probably the best vacation trip that we have ever had. We like Maui and Kuaui the best. I would love to live there, but the cost of living there is too high. In process of buying and moving into a new house. We will be moving from Coffee County to Franklin County.. However, we will still have a Tullahoma address. Decided to move out of the suburbs and out into the country. Our new house is almost completed surrounded by corn and soybean fields. It is really quite and peaceful out there. This has really been a major project. The new house required remodeling and some major additions which have taken about a year to finish. We have unable to move into the new house while the construction work was being done. We had many problems along the way including our contractor dying when we were about 80% done, but the foreman and the crew were able to finish the job. It has also been a major financial burden because I presently own two homes. I am currently working on some final touches and then comes the worst part. Moving all of our stuff (my wife, daughter, son-in-law, and 2 grand children). The new house has a lot more room for us and our extended family. It also has a nice 40X70 shop building, which was already there when we purchased the house. My daughter, son-in-law have already moved into the new house, but my wife and I are still at the old house. When you have lived at one place for 38 years, moving is a major undertaking. I still lhave a lot of work to be done in the shop area (shelves to be built, wiring, air supply system, etc. ).
