Harriet's Story

Hello, I was born in Dodge City, Kansas and attended all levels of school there. I attended Lnicoln Elementary, Dodge City Junior and Senior High graduating in 1968. In 1969 I attended Dodge City Community College and stopped at the end of that year to marry Ted Phelps from Cimarron. I fondly remember high school and most of the students in my class. I thought we were a pretty gutsy group especially the football team and still laugh at some of the high jinks they were up to. Sports and events were fun especially the dances and spring talent show. Bleep if I can remember the name of it. Is this a senior moment or a blonde (now grey) moment? Who can forget social networking by "dragging Wyatt Earp blvd and parking in one of the lots to talk and goof off. Beats internet any day, meeting up with friends and spending 50 cents/gal for gas which was pooled by all in the car. It was always fun going with Diane, Cheryl and Melissa. Truly a laugh a minute. By the end of 1969 we had our first son Jason and Ted had won the only lottery of his life, the draft number 125. Vietnam was a dirty word and very scary for a young bride to put him on a plane and pray he'd be back. He enlisted in Warrant officer flight training but failed the physical and was stationed on Okinawa instead. I spent one year there with him and Jason. In spite of the circumstances it was a wonderful experience for us. Upon our return to the US he spent two years farming and then was hired by John Deere Company. He retired one year ago after 38 years working in parts and training f...Expand for more
or the company. Our second son Bogan was born in 1975 in Dodge. I developed a career in insurance working for Cimarron Insurance, John Holland and ending with Don Luallen. After 34 years in Dodge/ Cimarron we moved to Kansas City in 1984 expanding Ted's job with Deere. I returned to college in Johnson Co Comm College sharing school schedules with our two sons. After we moved to Davenport Iowa in 1987 I graduated from St. Ambrose University in Davenport with a BA in Psychology and Spanish 1988, Univerisity of Iowa with Master in Social Work 1990 in Marriage And Family, and finally The Graduate Theological Foundation in S. Bend, Indiana 2008 Doctorate of Psychology in Marriage and Family Therapy. I have worked with all age groups and have throughly loved my work. I owned my own practice for the past 10 years. That changed with Ted's retirement and I am on a self imposed hiatus for awile until I figure out what I want to do when I grow up. The hardest part of moving to the Southwest was leaving our family two sons, grandchildren and my youngest sister Mae in Davenport. Recently, we took a trip to Iowa that lasted one month, great options when retired, and had a wonderful visit. We can get there from here. The new pool was filled yesterday, the sun is hot, and the kids are coming down for most of June. Who can be having more fun than this? I hope to hear from anyone that cares to write and catch up on your life too. Hard to believe we're 60 not 18 anymore. Better than the alternative. My best regards to anyone who reads this. Harriet
