Heather's Story
Life
After high school, I went to Pace University in New York for one year and then transferred to Mount Ida College both for Equestrian ScienceÂ
yes, I really did want to teach horseback riding and earned an AssociateÂs degree, and then right away a BachelorÂs of Liberal Arts thereÂ
just in case while teaching summers and weekends.
After the BachelorÂs to the dismay of my professors, as I graduated top in my class, I really did go and teach horseback riding full time at a beautiful place in North Andover with a nice indoor ring called RS sport horse at the time. I loved it except for the money and the abuse of my timeÂ
and eventually when the owners starting bouncing my paychecks and expecting more and more work for free I realized this wasnÂt the life for me.
Next, I did some secretarial and switchboard Âfun at Hillhaven and PME commuting back to Lexington until I discovered the field of Occupational Therapy placing therapists for PME and met my later to be husband. I decided to go back to school again and earned a MasterÂs in Occupational Therapy from Boston University commuting from a few different places until finally ending up where we live now in our home in Shrewsbury, MA. Unfortunately, during this time my father died in a motorcycle accident at the age of 47.
I worked as an OT for about 3 years and ended up managing the entire northern region of nursing homes for my company at the time, when another tragedy struckÂ
I went numb from the waist down. Being in health care I cared for everyone but myself and was sure it was ju...Expand for more
st stressÂ
but when it didnÂt go away, I finally sought help and ended discovering I had Multiple Sclerosis.
Eventually, I stopped work as a therapist from the stress and after some time off, did some Âlighter work as a medical biller, and finally opened my own home business with a friend five years ago. We have a family daycare in my home, licensed for 10 children. Days when I am fatigued, or have doctorÂs appointments, she covers for me. And most days when I feel well, I get to play, teach, and enjoy the kids that my husband and I chose not to have, so I could take the medicine I need to stay healthy. In addition, my OT background helps me remember how to care for myself, and helps with the kids too! And thankfully, the numbness issues have been temporary for me. I typically only battle with stiffness and fatigue, and occasional sensory issuesÂno wheelchairs or anything terrible, in the scheme of this illness, things have been mild, partly from luck, and partly because I stay on top of the research and do everything I can.
I hope this does not sound too depressing, as I have found that through adversity I have learned to slow down my ÂOCDÂ personality as much as I can and enjoy the little things more. I truly appreciate life, and have a great deal of fun, and I am blessed to have a great guy to share things with who puts up with me on the days when IÂm not so positive, and has fun with me when I am!
We should all be so lucky. And I hope you all are.
