Heidi's Story

Life I graduated from UTEP in Mechanical Engineering. GM picked me up after my sophomore year and gave me another scholarship (I had one from UTEP) and I worked for them in the summers. I met Jeff at the beginning of my second summer there. We got engaged 2 months later. We married the next summer, in 91. We both worked for GM for about 10 years (including student co-op time, then a few years in Michigan.) After 4 nice years together golfing, going out whenever we pleased, and a little travel and camping, Amanda was born in Michigan, after which, we moved back to El Paso to work in the maquiladoras. A couple years later, Emily was born. We finally left GM and El Paso and moved to CA. My parents moved out, too. Jeff & I worked in the high tech industry in Sonoma County. After 2 years, my company (Textron) moved back east. I took the time to be home with the girls, who were in preschool. My mom taught at a really good preschool-8th private school. The girls were able to attend, thanks to great tuition benefits from Grammy working there. After a couple years, I started teaching middle school math there (6th grade through geometry). I really enjoyed that! Inspired by Mr. Henderson, the best math teacher ever, I found the teaching was rewarding, I only had 3 classes in the morning, then I was free for the day, I got to see the girls now and then (it was a small campus), and I got to get paid for doing math every day! I did it for 2 years, then had Maggie. Since then, I've been so happy to stay at home (although it seems that I'm never actually at home!) After 7 years with his company (OCLI-turned JDSU), Jeff was working as an Operations Manager and had had enough of corporate life and lining someone else's pockets. He decided to go into business for himself and decided on buying a f...Expand for more
ranchise. After some consulting, he decided that AAMCO was the right business for him. He knew he wanted to own 2, so we started looking for regions which had 2 territories available. I was hooked on the west coast, and after a lot of thought and evaluation, we decided on Portland, Oregon. Leaving Santa Rosa was hard. I had good friends from the girls' school and our church was like a second family. I still keep in touch with friends from school and church, as do the girls. Jeff worked too hard to have too many friends, but keeps in touch with a few good friends from work. We enjoy going back when we can. We've been in Portland for just over 2 years now. Jeff opened his first shop in March of 2006. While business has its ups and downs, it has been doing really well. He just bought his second shop last week and opens this week on Wednesday, 10/24. We love Portland. It's so beautiful and has so much to offer. The older girls are going to Catholic School here at our parish school. It's a great school and they're doing really well. Maggie is in a great preschool, which she attends 3 afternoons a week. Between the 3 of them, they are active in soccer, gymnastics, Girl Scouts, youth group, ballet and social activities. I go to the gym 4-5 days a week. I started running last year and started playing around again with gymnastics. They have adult open gym at my daughters' gym a couple nights a week. Unfortunately, the running was a bit hard on my knee and I had to have knee surgery for a torn meniscus on 10/3/07. It's healing well and I'm easing back to the gym. I don't have a lot of time for other activities, but enjoy cake decorating, and have made a small business of it, which I hope to grow by getting a diploma from Western Culinary Institute in Patisserie and Baking next year.
