Helen's Story

My ex-husband and I eloped in 1953 after my freshman year at Purdue. I spent the next 4 years as a Navy wife in Washington, D.C. and in Long Beach, California. My son was born half way through the Navy years. The next 3 1/2 years were spent at Purdue while my husband acquired his Bachelors degree. My first daughter was 15 months old when we moved from there to Minneapolis, Minnesota. I spent the next 18 years as a corporate wife. My second daughter was born 1 1/2 years after we moved to Minneapolis. One year later, my husband's job took us to Amsterdam, The Netherlands. We spent 4 years there. It was a nice experience and it enabled us to travel around Europe to places we probably would not have visited otherwise. My favorite place to visit was Paris, but our travels took us to London, several places in Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, Luxenborg, Switzerland, and Italy. We returned to the USA and Minneapolis in 1968 where we stayed until 1973 when the job took us to Boston. In 1974, I returned to the student world and received my BA with a Psychology major in 1977. I received my MEd with a counseling major in 1979. My marriage ended late in 1979. The divorce was difficult for my entire family. I did some travelling around the USA for a while, and I worked at my profession. I spent some time in New York City, San Francisco, and back to Boston again since my chi...Expand for more
ldren were located there and in Hartford, CT. I spent 8 years on Cape Cod in the small town of Sandwich. I enjoyed those years. However, it took each of my children 2 1/2 hours to get to me there, so I agreed to move to the Worcester, Mass. area in 1993. I have been here ever since. I am now pushing 74 years of age. I live in a Retirement Home for Senior citizens where I have a small studio apartment that I love. I do quite a bit of clerical work for the staff here. I take most of my meals in our large dining room, but I can cook for myself once in a while when I get hungry for my own cooking. I have written a book, and it has been published. It addresses ethics and responsibilities of human services professionals. I am responsible for marketing it and have written a pretty good flyer to send out. I just seem to have trouble finding time to put together a mailing list of instructors of college students who aspire to become Human Services Professionals. I have 8 grandchildren (5 girls and 3 boys) whom I enjoy when I get to spend time with them. They are all busy. 2 have graduated from college, 3 are college freshmen this year, 2 are in high school, and the youngest is 10. I do a little informal counseling here with my fellow residents. Somehow, whereever I go, I get discovered as a good listener - the most valuable skill a counselor has. That pretty well does it.
