Helen's Story
Well, this is my story:
I grew up in Newman until I was 16 years old. During my Junior year at Orestimba High School our house (which was across the street from the then swimming pool) mysteriously burned down, while we were away. Everything we owned, pictures and all burned to the ground. Since we had no place to live in Newman we had to move to Modesto. I continued my Junior year in high school at Downey High, then graduated from Downey in 1975. I guess our house burning was the best thing that ever happened to our family, because we all excelled in school and in our careers. I went to Modesto Junior College where I seen a lot of people I grew up with in Newman. I got married in 1977, had three boys who are all self sufficient adults now. Then got a divorce in 1993. My oldest son Joey is a dance instructor and dances in Lake Tahoe. He has 2 kids. My youngest son Chris works for Tesla Moters, is married and has two kids. My middle son Benny also works for Tesla Motors, he doesn't have kids yet; but is very involved with his nephew's snd niece's lives. God has blessed my kids with great careers and families I'm very proud of them.
Living in Newman, I never knew my biological father; however, after getting a ...Expand for more
job with the DMV in 1984 I was told that I could access his information for a fee, it took some time but I finally was able to track down where he lived and I wrote him a letter, to my surprise he called me, we spoke for 3 hours and he was quite upset that my mother never allowed me to use my true last name of Mihalopoulos. Me and my dad became good friends and we felt as if we knew each other all my life. I lost my dad in 2006 after he lost a battle with lung cancer. I am very grateful to God that he allowed me to meet my dad and share so many wonderful life experiences with him.
I still work for the DMV as a Driver Safety Manager in Stockton and visit Newman, usually during the fall festival to see my aunt and cousins, especially Cecelia McWaters. We were like sisters growing up in Newman. I continue to live in North Modesto. My mom and stepdad live in Midesto as well and are doing well. We always say my mom is going to outlive us all; she has always looked much younger then she is; however, she does have dementia and forgets things. My Lord Jesus Christ has watched over me and my family for as long as I can remember (how else could We have survived growing up) I'm grateful for his love and protection.
