Helen's Story
Life
A biochemistry major in college and graduate school in Chicago, I worked in molecular biology research for half my career and then taught general chemistry at the local community college for the second half of my career until I retired in May 2004. Most of my adult life I lived in Oak Ridge, TN, where I raised two sons. After retirement I moved to Chicago to be with Arthur Schneider whom I knew in college. We did our PhD theses with the same advisor (he also went to medical school simultaneously). With his sons and grandsons on both coasts and my sons, brothers and mother around the country we travel a lot.
While in Teaneck, I birded a lot with my brothers and Hackensack Audubon Society. Birding lapsed until 2000 when I began goi...Expand for more
ng on birding Elderhostel trips to Arizona, Oregon, Costa Rica and in March 2007 west Texas and Copper Canyon, Mexico with my best friend from college who is also my ex-sister-in-law.
During college I became very interested in handweaving and in the 1980's studied drawloom weaving in Missouri and Sweden. As a result I have a huge drawloom, 7' (60" weaving width) x 11' x 6' high, taking up half of Arthur's dining room. I also have a more normal 40" weaving width floor loom as well as a couple of table looms. I am active in Complex Weavers, a national group, and am currently doing an intensive study group on weave structures.
Retirement is great - no stress and freedom to travel or do what you want when you want - and highly recommended.
