Helena's Story
I did not graduate with the rest of my class in 1958. I left after grade eleven.
I went to Menno Bible Institute with Anna Baergen, Mary Penner, and Walter Regehr. It was the best 5 months of my life to that point. After that I went to Calgary, worked for the TD Bank for roughly 14 years, had cancer, then a kidney removed , then on disability for almost two years. I then enrolled in Mount Royal College, in the Applied Social Sciences program, and graduated with President's Honours. After a few years I tried to do something really easy and went to work in Ladies Retail. As a manager, I used all the knowledge I could possibly learn from my courses, to deal with some very difficult people. Imagine that! It wasn't as easy as I thought it might be.
If anyone remembers me, you might remember the time I went weaving from the classroom, very dizzy. I had several absence or petit mal seizures during those years. Nine years later I expe...Expand for more
rienced grade mal seizures, and was diagnosed with epilepsy. Something that the "BAERGEN" family was genetically prone to. .
I'm 74 years old now, (1940), and ten years ago took a few painting lessons. I write poetry and the occasional story, and include my landscapes, or city scenes.
I will always be thankful to Mr. Jack Lampitt who was my grades 8 and 9 teacher, and who said to me "Lena, come back and take your grade 12, you can still do it"., but I was too unsure of myself to even try.
He was standing near the road as I drove home from town on my bike, when he stopped me and told me that. Some people you just never forget. To those who saw me acting silly I just want to say, I got my share of disapproval from my teachers, but no help, and that I sincerely apologize for embarrassing myself so many times.
To everyone else those I don't and do know, be well, be safe, and God hold you in the palm of His Almighty hand.
