Herman G's Story
School:
Grade school at St. Augustine's, Richmond, Michigan; 9th grade at Anchor Bay High School; shipped off to boarding school grades 10 through 12 (best thing that could have happened) Assumption College School, Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Fond memories from St. A's and Richmond; brief but significant stop at Anchor Bay High where I also have many fond memories.
College:
Following high school, I enrolled at John Carroll University in University Heights (Cleveland), Ohio. Relatively small school in an idyllic setting. However, too much like boarding school, so I enlisted in the Marine Corps after 5 days. I completed the Semester before I went to boot camp.
I didn't return to school full time until age 30 when I quit my job with the Detroit Police Department and enrolled at the Univ. of San Francisco to complete undergrad. I then went to the University of Notre Dame where I earned a MBA (finance). Then to Case Western Reserve Univ. in Cleveland, Ohio for law school. In 2011, I took a sabbatical from law practice and enrolled in the graduate tax program at Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago where I earned a LLM is tax law. This break from practice to return to an academic setting and legal scholarship has been very invigorating. So much so that I decided to extend my "sabbatical" another year and I enrolled in the ...Expand for more
University of Connecticut School of Law's graduate program in insurance law.
Workplace:
I spent the Summers of 1969 and 1970 in Alaska fighting forest fires. I enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1970 and was discharged in 1973. I joined the Detroit Police Department in 1973 and enjoyed eight years as a police officer until I resigned in 1981 to return to college.
Following graduation from law school I returned to Detroit to work for one of Detroit's larger law firms. After four years at the law firm, I went to work in the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. Following four years trying criminal cases, I became litigation counsel at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. Next I became general counsel for a health care business followed by a stint at the Michigan Attorney General's Office. My practice today is basically business oriented such as employment, regulatory, corporate and tax law.
From 1990 to 2007, I was an adjunct lecturer of law in the School of Management at the Univ. of Michigan-Dearborn.
I have been so fortunate to have the opportunities that life has offered. I've also been blessed with good health and don't have any plans to retire. May son graduated from the University of Notre Dame where he played baseball. He lives in Nashville where I am opening a second law office. For now I’m splitting my time between both cities.
