AUTOBIOGRAPHY
OF
HOWARD A. STROWDER, LFD LE
My name is Howard Anthony Strowder, but I prefer to be called by my nickname, "Tony." I live in Cleveland, Ohio where I am a 40 year old divorcee with three wonderful daughters: Lauren(13), Jillian(10) and Jenna(10), yes twins. Except for my daughters, who stay with me two weekends a month, I live alone. Professionally, I am a licensed Mortician and the CEO of my family's 52 year old funeral home.
That is where I am presently, but here is how I got there ...
In September of 1951 my parents, Edward and Loretta Strowder, founded our family business, Strowder's Funeral Chapel. They worked extremely hard and grew the business until my father's retirement in 1986 and my mother's death in 1994.
I was born August 26, 1963, and for the most part raised here in Cleveland. However, because my parents were semi-retired "snowbirds," a good portion of my childhood was spent in Miami, Florida, where I graduated from Miami Norland Senior High School in 1981.
Directly after high school I enrolled at the prestigious Howard University in Washington, DC. During my tenure at Howard I majored in psychology and minored in chemistry. Although I was just a slightly-above-average student, I was ...Expand for more
recommended for the position of Assistant to the university's Research Methodologist. Research Assistantships are paid positions usually given to an outstanding graduate student, however I filled the position as an undergraduate. In May of 1986 I graduated from Howard University with a Bachelor of Science Degree (BS).
After graduation It was my intent to remain in Washington and attend graduate school. However, because of a family emergency, my parents requested that I return to Cleveland and help with the family business, and so I did. Also, during that same year, I married my college-sweetheart and brought her to Ohio with me. Mari and I divorced 11 years and three children later.
In the sping of 1987 I entered the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science (CCMS). After 12 months CCMS confered on me an Associated of Applied Science Degree (AAS), three months later I graduated with a Bachelor of Mortuary Science Degee (BMS). With the proper education, and after serving a one year appenticeship, I passed the National Board Exam (1988) and Ohio Laws Exam (1989) to become an Ohio Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer.
And now, after almost 20 years of funeral service, I am considering a change in career. This is where I am at.
