Ian's Story

Born in Inglewood, got into lots of mischief with buddy Ray Thurlow, went to Colonel Walker school. Family moved to Ogden in 1950. Started playing in community peewee hockey league. Went to Ogden school for grades 4-6, then back to Colonel Walker for 7-9. Best friends include Dave Samphire, Dennis Saigeon, Jim Browne, Rob English. Then off to Western Canada High. I was pretty shy back then - best friend was Don Roberts. After grade 12 didn't plan to go to university, but my dad made me go when U of A, Calgary opened in 1960. Goofed off, skipped classed and even exams, played hockey for University and Ogden Nomads and met Jeanette, my wife-to-be, when I picked her up during Calgary Transit strike. Flunked out after second year. Got married in 1963, started career as lab technician with a battery company. Was offered job as office manager in 1965, but quit to go back to UAC and graduated in 1966 with a degree in theoretical Math. Daughter Cindy was born 5 months later. Got hired by Hudson's Bay Oil & Gas as a computer programmer. Worked there for 9 years - great group of friends there including Merle Hickey, Ron Matuska, Dave Lathrop, Bob Paget. Played football and fastball in in-company league. Worked for 9 months for Canadian Arctic Gas Study then got dream job as computer department manager at Ashland Oil. Played fastball with Ashland in Petroleum league for 4 years. Son David was born in 1979. In 1980 Ashland got bought out by Kaiser Res...Expand for more
ources, then Dome Petroleum, which I couldn't tolerate. Co-founded Ogden Lushes hockey team with Ralph Legge - play hockey, drink beer. Played hockey with them until I was 65. Too many friends to mention. Got hired by Francana Oil & Gas in 1980, co-founded Petroleum league fastball team with Evan Walters. Francana was bought out by Sceptre Resources in 1982 so I got hired as a consultant with CMS Systems working for former HBOG boss Clive Pringle. CMS became sponsor for former Francana fastball team. Bought a lot in the Shuswap in 1981 and another in 1985. Worked for CMS until 1989, then got hired at Dome Canada by former co-worker Merle Hickey. Got buyout in 1991, but was burned out so I bought a soft drink vending company. Coke, Pepsi, and Cott Beverages kept forcing me out of machine locations so I gradually sold my machines and was fully retired by 2005. Sold one of my lots at the Shuswap about 1993 and started building my cabin on the other lot. Spend part of the summers out there. Bought an older mobile home in Cathedral City (right next door to Palm Springs) in 2006 and have been gradually renovating since. Celebrated 50th wedding anniversary in September. Have 4 grand-daughters ranging from 4 - 17 years old. Playing sports was a big part of my life. Am still a big fan of the Calgary Stampeders - started watching them in 1952 by climbing over the fence at Mewata Stadium. Am still in good health so far. Life has been and still is good.
