Ian's Story
After I graduated from Beck Collegiate, I did an Honours BA in Modern Languages at UWO, went to McGill on a scholarship for a year to begin an MA, then returned to UWO to finish my MA and get a PhD in French studies.
In 1969, having completed my PhD course work, I began teaching French at the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario, where I met my first wife, who was teaching nursing. I finished my PhD thesis and received the degree in 1973. In 1974, I was offered a position in UWO's French Department. Stayed there for 20 years and was chairman of the department from 1984 to 1994. In 1994, I was appointed vice-president (academic & research) at Universite Sainte-Anne in Nova Scotia. I retired in 2005.
I continued my interest in highland bagpiping after I left Beck. I played with several bands, was pipe major of a couple, and spent several years playing with MacNish Distillery Pipe Band, one of the world's top competition bands at the time. I am currentl...Expand for more
y pipe major of The Clansman Pipe Band, a non-competition band in Powell River, BC, where my wife, Velma, and I settled after my retirement. I spend several hours a week giving free bagpiping lessons mainly to children and teens.
I have two children, a boy and a girl, from my first marriage. My first wife passed away in 1985. I remarried, but divorced a few years later. Finally, Velma and I were married in 1998 and are still happily together.
My daughter lives in Vancouver and my son lives in Victoria, BC. My son and his partner had their first child, my first grandchild, a boy, in January of 2009 and had a daughter in November 2012. My daughter presented me with a third grandchild, a girl (pictured in my "Now" photo), in June 2014. My daughter works as a self-employed jewellery designer and my son is a treaty negotiator with the BC government.
My current interests are bagpiping, Esperanto, and translation, not necessarily in that order. I also read a lot.
