Ilvia's Story

Hi, I was born in Habana Cuba and have lived in Queens, Paramus NYC, NJ, Miami, FL, and in the Rio Grande Valley, Texas area. I went to school in Sta. Teresita in Habana, Cuba, a Miami Elementary School, St. Theresa's in Queens, NY, William Cullen Bryant HS in NY, Sta. Teresita in Santurce, PR, and graduated from Miami HS in 1971 a year early. I graduated from MDCC south campus in Miami, FL,, Florida International University in 1978, and 1992, Florida Gulf Coast University in 1999, and the University of Florida in 2007 where I was on a fellowship. I'm now enrolled in George Washington University, in DC and graduate in 2010. Can you tell I LOVE SCHOOL and am a lifelong learner? Professionally I am a national bilingual educational consultant from graded PK through college. I specialize in teacher training and also push-into classrooms to model teaching efficacy and techniques for academic success of bilingual, ESL, and Special Needs students curriculum and instruction in Urban and Inner-City Schools. My favorite place to be in near or on the beach. I adore my family and have friends in many different states of the union. Write back...comments and questions are welcomed... Q&A's This is an unforgettable childhood memory: I made my first holy communion in Habana, Cuba. I'll never forget having the militia search me and my belongings just prior to entering the church. They stood guard at the rear of the church with rifles. It was daunting. These were my career choices: I always wanted to be a lawyer or a teacher when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea, but decided to be a teacher idea. As it turns out, they were correct. Where I chill: i like to relax in beach areas. How I get to work: If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have a plane ticket, luggage, and my laptop, cell phones, my research, handouts and presentation to be able to deal with the day-to-day. My heroes are my grandmother a...Expand for more
nd my mother. I also admire my children for their accomplishments. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Rene Rodriguez, MHS Class of 1971 because he was my first love and high school sweetheart.. If I won $100 million, I'd give some of it to my children, then spend the rest on humanitarian projects, those I love, and then splurge on me, myself and I. Yes, I lived in graduate housing at the University of Florida. I'm a Kappa Delta Pi (educational excellence society). and was awarded an OBEMLA (now OELA) Fellowship in Bilingual /Bicultural Education, University of Florida, Gainesville. FL Awarded Colonel Glen Farris Scholarship for "Leadership and dedication to public service in the Hispanic community; Latin American Studies Department, University of Florida. I loved being in college and all aspects of campus life and activities. Especially studying in the libraries and hanging out at the Rathskeller at FIU talking politics with my friends and professors. My 10 year career goals: I would love to run a school as the administrator/principal where I would supervise and provide professional development for teachers, staff, and parents in a progressive school environment. Travel is a MUST!! Some plaques and accomplishments: Track and Field medals, Poetry trophy, Teacher of the Year plaques and certificates. Published a few articles. My 10 year leisure goal: In 10 years, I hope to a retired philanthropist and beachcomber.. I'm going to get there by being a workaholic. My oldest childhood friend and why: We met in fourth grade in school. We were the only two Cubans in school and lived in the same apt. complex. My first job: I worked in the storeroom basement of a neighborhood shoe store, where I got paid peanuts to stock shelves. What I remember most about it is the smell of leather, the Juke Box playing 60's tunes, and having my own money to buy my self clothes and shoes and especially pizza!
