Irene's Story
Life
For those of you from Cathedral High School looking for a classmate, I am one of the 12 children of Dorothy (Dowling ) Ashton who graduated from there in 1945. Read the last few lines of this bio for more info about her. For the rest, my bio is here:
After High School, I went to MCC and Trenton State College. I graduated with a BA in Public Administration and went on to become clerk at the Edison Post Office and later became only the second female letter carrier in Metuchen. I married in 1983 to Howard Furbeck from Edison. In 1987, I gave birth to a premature daughter who was very ill for 18 months and have been home ever since. I did teach a summer camp for 6-8 year olds in 1997 and then went on to become a pre-school teacher assistant that lasted a year until I became ill. My 3 daughters are 19, 21and 23. My oldest daughter Lisa is in Edinburgh, Scotland at the Universiity of Ediinburgh study8ing to become a Doctor of Vetereinary Medicine. .My middle daughter, Kristin, is graduating in May from Rutgers with a Bachelor of Fine Art...Expand for more
s degree. My youngest Colleen is a freshman at Fairleigh Dickinson University and started as a freshamn on the Women's soccer team. She is enrolled in the Quest program and will get her Master degree in Secondary Math Eduction in 5 years. . I am currently disabled and a homemaker. My twin sister Jane is married and was the one of the first female police officers to join East Brunswick in 1980. She is now a Lieutenant in the East Brunswick Police Force. She will be retiring after 31 years on the force in July. She has 2 stepdaughters and 2 granddaughters. She and I live only twenty minutes apart and stay in touch constantly. I have kept in touch with some teachers, I recently talked to Mrs. Polhemus and Mr. Siliato. They are doing well. My mom still lives in Edison and my sister Elaine moved next door with her 5 kids. Ten of my 11 brothers and sisters are still living,
My mom now has 26 grandchildren and 2 great granddaughters. She is still involved with St. Matthews and is doing well. Most of my family still lives in New Jersey.
