J.B.'s Story

Life It was in high school that I began my rebellion against convention, wanting to transcend the mundane careers available to most of us at that time. In college I toyed briefly with going to medical school, but learned that such a career path was only for geniuses, those with tunnel vision, blind ambition, or all of the above. I chose to pursue other interests instead. College graduation brought with it the stark realization that a good education and strong work ethic were not the stepping stones to career success my generation and those following had been led to believe. With no contacts or influential relatives to help me get my foot in the door, I took a job as a bouncer in a rock 'n roll nightclub. Not my best career move by a long shot. There's more. Somewhere along the way I became involved with competitive bodybuilding and moved to Southern California. I managed a gym in San Diego part time and ma...Expand for more
de ends meet by working for a skanky, charter bus outfit cleaning buses. I also worked in a car wash, and as I did these things, I often reflected upon the media messages of my childhood: "To get a good job....get a good education." Sure. Presently, I'm divorced and living in Bow, New Hampshire with my son, Joe. Eventually, after having sat through countless frustrating job interviews with bored, tired old men and ditzy, female human resource people, I figured I might as well start my own business. That's exactly what I did eleven years ago. It's a health and fitness consulting practice serving corporate and private accounts. As successful as this venture has become, I'm still looking for other jobs.....having become weary of having obese, chain smoking, jelly doughnut addicts cry on my shoulder as they wonder why they can't lose weight. Mention my name if you hear of any interesting jobs Later, Jim Ganley
