Jack's Story

Life I lived in lots of places growing up due to my dad being in the military. (Biloxi, MS/Kirksville, MO/Moberly, MO/Rutherfordton, NC/Belmont, NC/Norfolk, VA/GTMO, Cuba/Albany, GA/Key West, FL) Other than North Carolina, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba was my favorite place to live. Not because of the beautiful weather, the free swimming or movies, 15 cent games of bowling with free shoes or any of the other things associated with it. It was the people and events that shaped a time in my life that I will never forget, from playing baseball on my 1st little league team to riding motorbikes on the motocross tracks. I still remember playing ball with the Mincey brothers who lived on the same street with us and Mike Fitzgerald too. I remember during little league, pestering the coach to let me pitch and when we were in a game that we were getting blown out in he let me go in and try. I still remember Chris Mincey hitting a homerun off me that was so high we're still waiting for it to come down. The house that we lived in had a huge tree in the back yard that dad built a deck around with a bar for parties with his Navy buddies. The tree was so big around that our dog, Grouch, could climb to the second branch by getting a running start. I remember one of the last things I did before I left there. Eric Jensen, Rusty Elwood and myself tried to set up a couple of smoke canisters (that Eric had lifted from a jeep) to pull the pins when the teacher opened the door in the a.m. We couldn't get it to work so Eric just pulled the pins and tossed them in the room, man what a racket. They beat against the walls until they got lodged somewhere. I can't remember the teacher’s name, but she was an older woman nearing retirement age. The next day that class was covered with the coolest green film you ever saw. All of the cobwebs in the corners of the rooms were green. Needless to say we got caught. When you are a military brat not only do you get in trouble but your military parent does too. Man i...Expand for more
f I could have just frozen time right there. Guantanamo Bay, Junior High, '69 thru '73, what a great time and a great bunch of people. My next door neighbor was my math teacher, Mr. Fisher, how awkward was that, good thing I liked math. Yes, if I could have frozen time that is where I would have done it. After leaving Gitmo, we went to Albany, Ga. They were closing that base down so we were only there 6 months then moved to Key West, Florida. Boy things really went downhill from there. Sure I met a few really great people and had some good times but High School in the mid 70's led to some really poor lifestyle choices for me. I had about ten years of my life from '76 thru '86 go "Up In Smoke". (To borrow the title from a popular album from that era) During those years I had one failed marriage and two great children. Around '85/'86 I underwent a spiritual transformation that led to an upswing in circumstances for my life. I married a second time. We had twin boy’s right after we were married. That marriage lasted about 14 years, at the end of which I was able to retain custody of the twins. All my children: Corey (age 30) lives in Utah, Ben (age 25) lives in Utah, Stephen and Joshua (age 20) live in North Carolina. I went through about 20 jobs between '76 and '86. Then in about '86 I took over a snack truck business selling sandwiches drinks and snacks to warehouse and plant workers from my brother. After doing that for about 7 years and finding myself not being very successful at adding new business when old business dropped off I went to work for one of my customers, ARC company. I stayed with them for about 7 years until I found out that you could make money driving your own vehicle delivering packages. Sounded like a great idea to me so I left a job that had benefits (company paid health ins., 401k, Dental) for a new opportunity that had none. 9 years latter I am still in the delivery business, only in a different capacity.
