Jack's Story

Life Wow -- an interesting life. Following graduation from the UW, I spent the early years of adulthood married to Barbara Lonac (HHS class of 1965) and among other great things we had two wonderful children - Jennifer Lynne Hogarty and Patrick Durney who both work in the commercial department at Durney Insurance. I married Sue Ann (Stubberfield) Johannes (HHS Class of 1964)and we blended our families and I have two step children, Anneliese Johannes Flansburg (a teacher in Vegas) and Vaughn Johannes an occasional forestry tech during the day but whose passion is playing in a rock band. S.A. is a teacher at McDermoth Elementary in Aberdeen. We enjoy enormously our two granddaughters - Kaila and Kylie Hogarty. For years the family owned a travel agency but we sold it to the manager a few years ago and focus now on our growing and very successful insurance agency in Hoquiam. With Jenn and Patrick in the business we are a strong third generation business. Community service and political activity have been an important part of my life. ...Expand for more
In addition to working on various United Way and Hoquiam Development Association projects, I have served on the board of Grays Harbor College, the Public Development Authority of Grays Harbor (the Satsop Development Park that was created from the nuclear power plant property), and the board of First Community (now called Venture) Bank. My elected political experience includes serving on both the Hoquiam and Aberdeen city councils (yes I lived in Aberdeen for awhile.) I was also elected mayor of Aberdeen and after moving back to Hoquiam with Sue Ann, I was elected mayor of Hoquiam in 2003. I was just re-elected in November, 2007. The local economy is definitely on the upswing and we are seeing new and refurbished housing and significant new businesses in Hoquiam that focus on sustainability. We recently celebrated the opening of the nation's largest bio-diesel plant - Imperium Renewables - in the port area. Life is a lot of fun now that everyone has flown the coop. We enjoy Tokeland enormously where we have a summer home on Willapa Bay.
