Jack Garrett's Story

Graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1966. My apologies to my classmates at USNA. The only way it would list me as a member of the class of 72 was to put that I attended from 68 to 72. If I put 68 to 70 they listed me as a member of the class of 70 who would never claim me. :} I was a real jerk in High School. Self-centered and insecure, my life was one crazy act after another while constantly seeking acceptance from peers. The Navy brought out my potential. My father was a career Naval Officer and was my idol. He passed away when I was twenty years old and attending the United States Naval Academy. Dad was like my anchor and his death led to several years of grief, drifting and seeking for self-direction. I managed to graduate from the Univ. of Houston in 1971 and the Univ. of Utah in 1981 with degrees in Economics and Accounting, respectively. From 1971 to 1978 Lucas Petroleum kept the doors open for me to work off and on. In 1979 the lure of the mountains took me to Utah where I have lived ever since, except for a short work assignment in Africa, and a five year assignment in Dallas, Tx. Settling down in 1981, I met and married a wonderful woman, Tammie Hardy, and over ten years we had three lovely children. In 1983 a major International Company brought me on as a staff accountant and this led to a 29 year career, taking early retirement in 2012, after many rewarding assignments. Diagnosed as manic depressive in 1976 my mood swings became stabilized by taking Lithium, and have been fairly stable since, if I take my medicine. My marriage to Tammie ended in 1991, because of failure to take medicine regularly, which led me to realize that not taking medicine is part of the disease. erience and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints and adopted their health code. I have not had a drink since. With therapy and medication, I am not the same person I was in High School. I volunteer with the Red Cross, having served in shelters in Hurricane Katrina, helped the displaced in Super Storm Sandy, served meals after the West Texas explosion, and currently helping the displaced in several local and national fires, and working with our Service to Armed Forces division. I have served to the best of my ability in a variety of callings in my Church for 43 years. I know that through the atonement of Jesus Christ all mankind can be saved through his grace and by following his commandments. Throughout my life many of you and many others helped me when I was feeling depressed or overly anxious. I hope to live many more years so I can give back a little of the blessings I have received of others. I married the second time in 1996 to a wonderful woman, Yolanda, from Colombia. She has been an attorney and a judge as well as a translator of legal documents. Unfortunately she is currently suffering from terminal pancreatic cancer. Retirement allows me to devote most of my time to her, as I am finding that managing cancer is a full time job. Between us we have five beautiful children, and four grandchildren, (check out our pictures). If I have offended any of you in my early years, I ask your forgiveness. I look back at the wasted opportunities and pain I caused others in High School and the Navy with much regret. With great brothers and sister, a great extended family, and loving children, I have been able to turn my life around and now receive the greatest joy when serving others. If any of you ever come up to Utah, please stop by. Jack Williams
