Jack's Story
Life
I never would have guessed that I would end up designing and building zoological exhibits for a living. I was constructing schools, post offices, bridges and all kinds of other boring things when in 1994 fate took me for a lucky turn. Needing a project and without a clue what I was getting into, I was the low bidder to the City of Dallas for the new Kimberly Clark Chimpanzee Forest at the Dallas Zoo. That was almost fourteen years ago now and I have been there ever since designing and building their exhibits. During that time I have had the pleasure of transforming what was once a public disgrace into what is now a world-class zoological park.
I have come to know that the most valuable thing a person can have in life are their good memories and I am grateful to have many. From the wonder years growing up in El Paso and going to school at Bonham, McArthur and Burgess to these silver years, I have always been blessed.
It has been said that the hardest part of growing old is remembering when you were young. The older I get the better I understand what that really means.
Anyway, a twenty three year long marriage ended for me early this year. It is turning out to be one heck of an adjustment. Like most things in life it has its good parts and of course, the bad. I have my cameras, darkroom, fishing boat and best friend - an old dog named Tory to keep my busy when Im not working.
For an update. Middle Age Crazy sure can be fun. In mid October I purchased a new Honda Gold Wing and set out to find America. I took off for two weeks and visited the Western states. In just over 4,200 miles I was in Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, Utah, Nevada and California. Talk ab...Expand for more
out America the Beautiful! I enjoyed every mile of the trip and all I can think about since I got back is plans for my trip in the Spring to tour the southern states!
July 24, 2017
I thought I should post an update while I still have an opportunity to do so.
In 2012, I woke up one morning and was unable to think and just barely able to function without assistance. A few days later a doctor informed me that I had multiple brain tumors and "For months - 6 months- perhaps less." It took almost a month to learn he was wrong. I learned so much about life and what really mattered and what did not during that short period. I actually gained a lot from that experience.
It turned out I have Multiple Sclerosis and numerous lesions on my brain. After several days of testing my cognitive functions I was informed my short term memory was "almost nonexistent" and my executive functions were "severely impaired." These changes forced me into an early retirement.
While the disease has robbed me of my ability to do many things, I have been blessed by changes that have enabled me to do new things I never could before I became ill.
I'm keeping myself busy and enjoying my life. My wonderful wife showers me with love, care and protection. While I no longer have a short term memory, my memory prior to 2012 remain unaffected and intact. I have so many wonderful memories I enjoy every day. My memories of my wonder years and the days we spent together at Burges remain intact and provide me with lots of smiles.
I have been so blessed by the wonderful life I have lived.! Thank you all for being a part of my life and living on in my memories of wonderful times.
May God bless you all.
