James (Jim) Truitt's Story

Life; "In a flash": I didn't go to school in Cumby; BUT beginning my Sophomore year, I had many Cumby friends and living in Dallas, after HS we continued to run around together. I served 2 years in the National Guard at Sulphur Springs while in HS. After living and working in Dallas for about 9-months, I Enlisted in the Navy and after completing Boot Camp, I burned my cotton sack for a Navy career and "Too see the World"; Well, just a little of it. I lived in Hawaii 1.5 years on two different occasions, Spain 1.5 years and in Guam, 2.5 years. I sailed in the Arctic, North and South Pacific and North Atlantic Oceans and in many seas but I only got close to the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans. I transited the Panama canal in each directions but only passed the entrances to the Suez canal fron the Mediterranean Sea. I made visits to all continents with the exception of Antarctica. I had received my Rabies shots (14 of them) at a very young age, that has keep me from going crazy but one might disagree. I was diagnosed with cancer, the first time, when I was 31 years old, and the last time in 2006, from exposure to Radiation &/or Agent Orange but have been cancer free since 2007. I've been told that I'm without a heart; therefore, without a heart there can't be any heart problems; I must be lucky in that respect. My most enjoyable pass time was spent attending bull fights in Spain. Oh Yes: Retirement is still the "Best Job" that I've ever had! I'm getting pertty dang old, you know George Washington was born in '32 and I came along in '33. But I'm looking forward to the next 50 years, and then, the rest of my life; and I think I'll be 18 next year. H S School: I was very lucky to get out of HS with a diploma. That facility provided me with no foundation to continue my education, since my reading ability had stalled at the third/forth grade levels due to dyslexia. That problem is still present but was minimized about ten (10) years into my NAVY career. But now that problem has returned, following CHEMO in 2006-2007. College: When possible, I enrolled in courses at various colleges during my off-duty hours. English became my most enjoyable subject, perhaps that was because that's where I had the most to learn, or was it because that was the classes where all the women were enrolled? I've forgotten! After retiring from the Navy, while working a 40 hour week, I completed my undergraduate work, earning a BA and BS degrees with some post graduate work. at the University of TEXAS, at Tyler. And I still have much to learn. Workplace: Working in Oil and Gas Experation as an Electronics Engineer in Tyler, Texas. Was very interesting and satifying work. I was able to work, travel, and visit many new and interesting places in a seven state region. Military: Following Basic training in San Diego, CA, I was assigned to a ship Home Ported in San Diego. I began my Navy career in Ordna...Expand for more
nce and Gunnery. I served aboard a Landing Ship, Tank (LST) off-Korea during that "Police Action". I participated in two series of nuclear bomb tests in the South Pacific; 1954 and 1962. Witnessed the detonation of Thermonuclear devices, which is an unbelievable site. Most of my Navy career was working with guided missiles and nuclear weapons in the submarine service. Had I known in high school, that I would be working on nuclear bombs for 20 years, I would have taken physics. I served aboard a diesel submarine in the Pacific and a nuclear powered submarine in the Atlantic and Pacific. I Armed the nuclear War Head on the only ICBM missile ever Fired by the U S Navy; on 5/6/62. I also served in one Naval Air Squadron in California and aboard two submarine tenders, one Home ported in Rota, Spain and one in Agani, Guam. I served a 14 month, "In country, tour" in Vietnam during that fight. The Navy was good for me, and it was also very good to me. During my 23.5 years of Naval service, I received a total of 3.5 years of technical schooling/training. But my son out done me, He retired from the Army after 22 years of service, of which was 7 years of schooling. I made Chief Petty Officer 12 years after boot camp and received a commission in the Regular Navy four months later. I qualified for "Command at Sea". I crossed the Arctic circle four times from the Pacific and twice from the Atlantic. I crossed the Equator at the 180 meridian on 12/16/72 (my dad's birthday) and arrived in Sydney, Australia, twelve days later. That is a great place for a New Years party. HOLD LIFE MEMBERSHIP IN: Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), U.S. Submarine Veterans Inc (USSVI), Gamewardens of Vietnam. HEROS: JOHN WAYNE ! Rocky Bleier, the former Pittsburgh Steelers running back. Before Rocky was a Steeler, he was a badly wound Vietnam Vet, doctors didn't know if he would ever walk again. I set as the "Head-of- the-table" aboard ship for lunch 73/74, Rocky (1 of 5 NFL playeers on a USO tour) set on my left. I was honored to have him select my table for lunch. We had a great lunch and a good visit. So in 2006/2007, when I could not walk, I though about what Rocky had accomplished after not knowing if he would walk again. I can't walk as well as he can run but I'm still making improvements. Rocky is now a Motivational Speaker. Only in the Navy. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be going strong. I was so ................ My father was better off, than his father and I wanted to be better off than my father. I don't know if I accomplished that. Are Levi's still in style? We lived on farms, hunted and fished together, it was just natural Getting Rabies shot, one per day for fourteen (14) days. Traveled to Austin, in a Motal-T to get that treatments. Growing up, I always thought that I wanted to be a cowboy but as it turned out, by then, there were no more wild Indians to chase.
