Jim's Story
Life
Hmmm...where do I start?
<br><br>
35 years ago I probably knew you. Whether or not we were friends or hung in the same clique or not is irrelevant...I probably knew you.
<br><br>
I was talking with one of my neighbors a while ago, and the subject turned to "school subcultures", I'm sure all of you remember them.
<br><br>
There were seven (7) collective subcultures in the L.A. Unified School District as 'main perceptual anchors'Â of local status systems. Our generation had chosen super-ordinate terms to organize & simplify reference points: Soshes, Stoners, Surfers/Skaters, Low-riders, Rockers, Nerds and Punks.
<br><br>
We adopted the term "Soshes" as a generic collective for preppies, socialites, collegiates, jocks, shiddities, ivy-leaguers, elites, nine-0'Âs, etc.; "Stoners" for greasers, druggies, potheads, hempies, burnouts, gowsters, etc.; "Surfers/Skaters" for the plank-riding population, "Lowriders" for the obvious, "Rockers" for those of us who had progressively musical potential, and "Nerds" for brainiacs, intellectuals, egg heads, geeks, pencil necks, etc.
<br><br>
Last, but not least were the "Punks", or Alternative Kids - This is the group that got the worst of everything. They generally dressed to match the music they enjoyed listening to and were generall...Expand for more
y accepting of everybody, except the Preps (see, there is a higher power!).
<br><br>
Many of the cliques crossed-over to one another, I was clearly a Stoned Rocker/Surfer/Skater Punk and when (some of) the soshes got into music, they kind of crossed-over to the Rockers and started getting stoned as well. Go figure...poetic justice at it's best.
<br><br>
Ultimately I was neither in the "in crowd" or the "out crowd". I had two really good friends, and I haunted the fringe of some of the other crowds.
<br><br>
Now the stereotypes come in...
<br><br>
"Stoners amount to nothing", "Surfers have no life", blah, blah, blah, yada, yada, yada, etc.
<br><br>
As an adult, in addition to California, I've lived in Alaska, Arizona, Texas, Bangkok, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur. So much for the typical stereotype, huh?
<br><br>
So yeah, I eventually quit surfing and skating, gave up on the idea of being a rock star, then finally got my act together (albeit a little later than my peers) attended Cal, became an Audio Design Engineer, tiring of that after 10 years, I got into designing structured automation systems and million dollar home cinemas, which ultimately led to the Information Systems work that I've been in for the last 20 years.
<br><br>
Stoners amount to nothing huh?
