James's Story
Life
Greetings everyone,
It's Jim ('Berge') from Drafting in the class of 1976. I now live in London, married, with a six year old daughter. Having enlisted in the Navy on graduation, I served for six years in submarines, finishing my BA on the way, and was sent to Newport Officer's School in 1982. I went back to subs as a strategic weapons officer onboard an SSBN, and served until 1986. Then I ran off to Syracuse University, where I had a fellowship to law school. I finished the law degree and the MA in Politics in 90, and went off to London as to complete an LLM in Int'l Law at the London School of Economics. I had met Penny in London in 1987, and we were married in 1990. After LSE, we moved to Ireland where I took up an appointment at a law professor at University College Dublin. That was a great experience. I spent a lot of time travelling and teaching in Europe, and held vis...Expand for more
iting professorships in Poland, Hungary, Latvia, Belarus and Spain. I have several articles and one edited collection out in the fields of antitrust, legal history and European Union law. All the while, I kept my commission in the Naval Reserve, and was promoted to Commander in the USNR last year. In the summer of 2000 we were getting ready to leave Ireland and return to a law school in the US, when the NAVEUR chief of staff offered me a nice civilian position as advisor on European Union and NATO policy to the four-star admiral in charge of US naval forces in Europe. So we have been living in London - and loving it - since the beginning of 01. Meriden seems long ago and a long ways away now, but I still remember very clearly the years at Wilcox. I would like to hear from anyone in the bicentennial class of '76, esp. from Drafting, or the 3A/4A academic classes. Best wishes to all.
