James Butch's Story
Life
Graduated Queens College 6/77, got married (Mary Ann Pace LIC '71) & moved to Berkeley, CA to get a Master's in Exercise Physiology. Won the 1979 Sr Nationals, got divorced, won the 1980 Sr Nationals/Olympic Tryouts. MADE THE 1980 US OLYMPIC WEIGHTLIFTING TEAM (was forced to boycott by that peanut farmere from GA). Did odd jobs to get by while training and got to compete in Puerto Rico, Australia, New Zealand and China. Dislocated my shoulder in Australia and missed 1984 Olympic Team by 17 lbs.
Did Retail Management for 6 years in CA and transfered to Philly (5/89). Hated Philly, left the job (10/90) and moved back to CA (after 9 months back in Astoria). Went to "Computer School" 92-93 and have been Computer field since.
10 years at same company, but I've been quitting for the last 9 1/2. Looking to buy a house and had planned to move my dad out here. He Loved Astoria, but he "Hated the f*cken Winter!" He passed away 4/19/03, so I guess I'll need another "roomie" (any offers?).
As of Jan 2004, I FINALLY quit that job and moved to Colorado Springs to be a "Mentored" Weightlifting Coach at the Olympic Training Center. It was a 1 year gig, low paid and I lived in the Dorms. I ...Expand for more
expected this would turn out to be the best job I've ever had.
As expected, Colorado turned out to be a top 3 job and I've got little motivation to find a "just pay the bills" kind of job, so I'm "between jobs" right now. I'd like to be able to Coach Olympic Weightlifitng, but that's not a job that happens in the real world. So I may have to open my own little place and go from there.

I've been lucky enough to find one 14 year old Boy (Ian Wilson) to coach for pay in the last year. $100.00 for 2 hours. I coach him twice a week at his house. And he's a GREAT prospect, could go all the way. I also coach a Woman (Summer), who's husband (John Krazinski) is the Head Strength Coach for CAL (GO BEARS!). I don't charge her, since she gets me free tickets for all the CAL Football games, (here, on the road & Bowls too) I want to go to. Plus she get me a pass to the "5th Quarter", a post Home Game reception for all the Coaches and their family.
I haven't opened my own place, but Summer did in Jan. I've only used it a few times because it's hers and her clients come first. But she's had such great success, I should be able to use it a lot more when the kids get out of school in June.
