James's Story
Workplace
Jim Byrom is currently the Chief Information Officer, a Vice President, and a board member at Computing Technologies, Inc..
Spanning more than 25 years, JimÂs career began on the technical side of IT industry with many years in the United States Air Force. Performing in a variety of assignments, ranging from helpdesk support and QA to network systems engineer and Subject Matter Expert, Jim had an opportunity to fully Âround himself out in the various roles and responsibilities required of an executive-level IT professional. He built Information Warfare laboratories; wrote technical and training texts, magazine articles, and Air Force publications. During this period, Jim also earned three undergraduate degrees and a masterÂs degree; taught IT at three different colleges; and consulted as a Subject Matter Expert in the development of several nationally recognized IT certification examinations.
During a ten-year period overlapping his military service, Jim also built and established his own business (NetMedia). Working only part-time himself, he grew NetMedia, a professional services and network integrations company, from one individual into a multi-million dollar business with 107 employees. For those familiar with military life and its rigorous demands, this was quite an accomplishment.
Upon leaving the military, Jim sold NetMedia and moved into the corporate sector, working as the VP/Director of Engineering, Planning, and Training for e^deltacom, a division of the Southeastern telecom ILEC/CLEC giant - ITC Deltacom. In this capacity, Jim designed, built, and operated world-class, carrier-quality, fault-tolerant data centers.
Upon leaving e^deltacom, Jim functioned for a period of time as an executive-level consultant to IT-centric corporations which required the services of a Chief Information Officer. This led to the opportunity to consult successfully at the C-level with com...Expand for more
panies such as BellSouth, Allstate Insurance, Learn.net, Wal*Mart, Home Depot, Question Mark, Synovus, and the U.S. Government.
Returning to full-time corporate life, Jim joined the Fortune 500 listed Jacobs Engineering as a VP / General Manager over their Enterprise Information Services, within the Sverdrup Technology division. Here he was responsible for business operations; business development; P&L execution and accountability; tactical and strategic planning. He was also responsible for conducting bid and proposal management; subcontract negotiation; and the building of business alliance programs. During this period, Jim developed corporate and division level Knowledge Asset / Knowledge Management processes, platforms, and tools.
In mid-2003, another opportunity arose. Jim moved from Jacobs to their long-time protégé and partnering company, Computing Technologies, Inc. As their Chief Information Officer, he continued to work with long-time Jacobs allies, and lead, directed, planned, and organized a technological department and professional staff with both multi-group and multi-national functions, as well as multiple physical locations. He continues to perform business operations and customer-facing business development, as well as delivering a vast array of business systems, technological tools, and complete disaster recovery. His own point of pride, is in moving IT from a cost center to a revenue center within the space of only two years, while still performing a 100% infrastructure technology refreshment. An excellent corporate officer, Jim was nominated and elected to the board in 2004. There he provides corporate direction, and determines effective break points for returns on investment (ROI) and total cost of ownership (TCO) of information systems.
Recognized for these and other efforts, Jim has been listed in the 2003, 2004, and 2005 editions of ÂWhoÂs Who in Technology.Â
