James's Story
Posted 06/30/08
-- Lived in Stratford, across from Coventry, from '63 to '73. Attended OLF, George Read Jr High, and Penn.
-- Worked the night shift at Quality Inn Skyways from HS graduation in '72 thru Jan '74, then joined the USAF.
-- Spent a year PARTYING while attending Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA, then off to Brindisi, Italy, San Vito Air Station for 18 months, where I became a pinochle whiz and played both intramural and base-level tackle football. I had the pleasure of being part of a small USAF Air Station football team that beat the Navy's 7th Fleet team, Naples, Italy in 1976 in the only Shrine Football Game played outside the US at the time. What a blast! Coach Cole taught us well. Wish I had played like that in HS.
-- Reassigned to Ft Meade, MD (near Laurel, MD) in Jan '77 where I spent 16 of the next 17 years, retiring from the USAF as a MSgt/E-7 on March 1st, 1994. Only move during that time was a return to Monterey, CA for intermediate language school and another year of PARTYING from Oct '80 to Sep '81.
-- While in the Meade area, got a BS from UMUC in '89 and a MS from Bowie State University in '96, both in the field of Management Information Systems.
-- Have been with Computer Sciences Corporation since retirement except for a 7-month stint at IBM in '97. Started by doing some database and programming work, moved into technical management, then finally into program management. Currently Deputy PM for a 5-year, $135M program with the US Govern...Expand for more
ment in the Meade area. Also, for those of you in the know, picked up my PMP.
-- Married and divorced twice (that's enough of that!), and have three great kids from the second marriage; Andrew will be 13 in Sep, Margaret will be 15 in July, and Scott who turned 19 in May and is going full-time to Chestnut Hill College in Philly while also serving in the USMC reserves and playing with the idea of becoming an officer! Probably got that idea from the Naval Academy Plebes (freshmen) we sponsored in our home each year since '99
-- BTW, we were lucky enough our second year of sponsorship to get a football player. That was a fantastic four years! His name is August Roitsch from Houston, TX, and he was the starting center/guard for the Naval Academy team in '01, '02, and '03. Was just like watching my own kid play, not too mention got tickets to almost every game, including Navy-Notre Dame and Army-Navy.
-- August was arguably the best offensive lineman on the Navy team, especially in his last year. Here's a quote from navysports.com: "Navy's offensive line was instrumental in the NCAA-record 26-play, 94-yard, 14:26 epic drive in the 2004 Emerald Bowl. Offensive guard August Roitsch was named to the Sports Illustrated All-Bowl Team." One word of advice, though. If your kid weighs 280 lbs and can bench-press 450 pounds, you would be wise not to wrestle with him, especially after he has been drinking! ;)
-- Sorry I have missed all the Penn HS reunions. Hope to make the next one in 2012.
