James's Story

Life By the time I graduated in 1992, I had lived with my parents in Edmonds. In my freshman year at UW, I lived at Lander Hall with my roommate Karl Forar. Freshman year was also the first time that I had a boyfriend, Brian Matt. During my sophomore and junior years at UW, I returned to live with my parents, dating a lot but nothing serious. In the midst of developing as a dancer, I volunteered as a sound technician at Dance on Capitol Hill’s CHOREOFEST 1994.During my senior year, I shared an apartment with Jed Salminen and his friend Shawna. When I attended UCLA, I lived on campus at Hershey Hall. My first year roommate was Quan Nguyen. My second year roommate was Ron Rosell. During my time at UCLA, I was a mentor with the UCLA LGBT Mentoring Program, helping students deal with coming-out issues. On January 9, 1998, I made my national television debut on the game show JEOPARDY! where I won second place and a week trip to San Francisco, which I used during gay pride 1998. In May 1998, as part of UCLA Chamber Singers, we sang on stage at Royce Hall with The Chieftains. I returned to living with my parents in 1998. When I returned to Seattle, I also tried to find performing opportunities. Even though I had found some professional opportunities, most of my performing has been as a volunteer with Seattle Symphony Chorale, Seattle Men’s Chorus, ARC Dance Productions, XODO Dance Productions, Eastside Musical Theatre, and Seattle Opera. From 1999-2000, I lived in a condo on Capitol Hill with my ex-boyfriend Gary Schuldt. When Gary kicked me out March 2000, I returned to my parents’ house. In December 2000, I moved in with my partner Edward Darr in Des Moines, WA. We both lived together until Ed got a job in Fort Worth, TX in April 2002. I continued to live at his WA house until February 2003, at which point I returned to living with my parents. My second appearance on national television came March 4, 2003 when I appeared on the game show PYRAMID, where I was the leading prize winner, which included a week trip to Las Vegas, $1200, and a Sony 27’ flat-screen TV. My guest celebrities were Tyson Beckford and Diana Maria Riva. I moved to Texas August 2003 to live with Ed in Euless, TX. We were both active members in high school youth music ministry at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in North Richland Hills, TX. We both enjoy traveling, attending music and dance concerts, movies, dining out, and guy-watching. Ed returned to Seattle for work in October 2004 while I stayed behind in TX until I completed my degree requirements. I finally returned to Seattle and back with Ed in May 2005. School I attended Serene Lake from kindergarten through third grade. I then attended Picnic Point Elementary for fourth grade as part of the Summit program. I returned to Serene Lake for fifth and sixth grade. I attended junior high at Olympic View for seventh through ninth grades. My time at Mariner High school was one of the most stressful times of my life because I was struggling with coming out. Despite the anguish, my favorite subjects at Mariner were Keyboarding, Spanish and Orchestra. My favorite activities were Spanish Club, Knowledge Bowl, and Hi-Q. ted in 1992, I was quite relieved that high school was over. College In 1992, I entered the University of Washington having no idea what to major in. I tried Pre-Pharmacy, but the natural sciences were too challenging for me. Thanks to my sister Jennifer for suggesting that I take dance lessons on campus. By 1996, I graduated with a Liberal Arts degree with a major in Dance. Later that fall, I tried my best to build on the momentum from my undergraduate dance career at UW and apply it to graduate school at UCLA, in the Dance Program in the Department of World Arts and Cultures. Grad school and Los Angeles proved to be quite a shock for me as I took less dance courses and more music courses. I left UCLA campus in 1998 to return to Seattle without a degree, just an MA ABT (all but thesis). I even tried to complete my thesis away from UCLA, but I stopped registering for courses by 1999. The opportunity to return to graduate school came when my partner Ed got a job in Fort Worth, TX. When I decided to move with him to Texas, I figured this was the perfect time to return to graduate school. I started grad school at Texas Woman's University August 2003. Even though none of my UCLA credits transferred, I am glad that I got a fresh start in TWU's MA Dance Program, eventually graduating August 2005. This October, I return to UW to for the nine-month Extension Certificiate program in Arts Management for the Performing Arts. Workplace My first job in high school in 1989 was McDonald's in Lynnwood. Then I worked at Grand Cinemas Alderwood off and on from 1991-1994. At UW, I worked at the South Campus Center Newstand (1992-1993) and at the Medical Center Gift Shop and Espresso (off and on 1993-1997). As a grad student at UCLA, I was a Dance Teaching Assistant in the World Arts and Cultures department. I even had professional singing experience on campus and at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Tujunga, CA. When I returned to Seattle, I lasted for two days as a telemarketer with Pacfic Northwest Ballet until my brother Joe got me a job at his work at N2H2 (now called Secure Computing). During my time with the Internet company, I worked professionally in dance and theatre with David Roussve/REALITY and Village Theatre. I was laid off by N2H2 in June 2001 until I returned to work at PNB March 2002, first working in Information Systems before being promoted to Gift Entry Assistant in Development. During my time with PNB, I was a dance captain with Tacoma Musical Playhouse. Even with attending graduate school full time at Texas Womans University, I worked on campus as a Student Records Representative helping students with the application process. Having returned to Seattle in May 2005, I tutored from October 2005 to February 2006 through University of Washington's GEAR UP program. At Mercer Middle School, I tutored students in Math, English, and the afterschool program. At Rainier Beach High School, I tutored students in Spanish, Math, and the afterschool program. Now I work full time as an Office Assistant 3 at the University of Washington Dean of Public Health. Now that I have a full-time job again, I can continue to pursue professional performing projects at night.
