James's Story
Hi Everyone!
Well, to start where we left off, after graduation, I took degrees in English and French from U of I at Urbana. I then entered a Doctoral program in English at Cornell, but I left after obtaining an M.A. to go to Law School at the University of Michigan.
After law school, I moved to Washington to begin private law practice. Eventually, I joined the Federal Communications Commission, where I served both as Legislative Director and Special Counsel to manage implementation of electronic surveillance laws. I then served as an FCC Senate Fellow and telecommunications advisor to the Offices of then Minority Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD), Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) and the Democratic Policy Committee.
After leaving government, I founded my own legislative consulting firm, Mercury Strategies, LLC. I love the business and being my own boss. I principally represent telecommunications firms, high-tech companies, municipalities and universities on telecom issues before Congress, the Executive Branch and the FCC. Some of my most satisfying projects, however, is not about telecom--or about making money, since they are both done pro bono. One of them involves seeking funding and political support for an interfaith university with a core curriculum focused on peacemaking, the Nazareth Academic Institute in Nazareth, Israel, which brings Jewish, Muslim and Christian students together in an effort to seed peaceful relations in that troubled region. It is a candle of hope for the future that is now burning more brightly as is has recently become certified by the State of Israel as a branch campus of the University of Haifa, a victory that was gained in great part due to the efforts of our fellow classmate, Rob Prescott--now Professor Robert Prescott of Bradley University. Kudos to Rob! From 2007 until the retired players accepted a settlement from the NFL, I also represented Mike Ditka's "Gridiron Greats" organization, as well as the Vince Lombardi Foundation, on all legislat...Expand for more
ive matters associated with the interests of retired NFL players and their disability disputes with the NFL and the NFL Players Association. That representation has allowed me to learn about the cutting edge of Alzheimer's and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder research now taking place in some of our great medical institutions, which has been both fascinating and intellectually humbling.
A most unlikely need to update my personal life has arisen since I originally wrote this profile--I became engaged to a wonderful woman named Stephanie Pell, an attorney and ethics researcher at the Army Cyber Institute and professor at West Point. Her appointment there has her teaching in the fall semester at West Point and doing research here in Washington during the spring and early summer. A former federal prosecutor and ex-counsel to the House Judiciary Committee, she is an expert on electronic privacy and surveillance, terrorism prosecutions, cybersecurity and the ethics of cyber warfare. We have just renovated a row house on Capitol Hill, which we enjoy relaxing and entertaining in, along with our two cats.
2021 Update: I'm sorry to have missed all of you who went to our reunion this October. The current craziness in Washington, as well as the threat of COVID, made it impossible for me to make the trip. Since my last entry several years ago, Stephanie and I have tied the knot and, after she received academic tenure in her position at West Point, she became a fellow at the Brookings Institution, as well as an editor at the national security blog Lawfare, which now allows her remain in DC with for the entire year--a great comfort to me and, I hope, not too large a sacrifice for her. We remain happily ensconced in our home on Capitol Hill with Sadie and Sophie, our two Ragdoll cats.
I would love to hear from any of my classmates and, if you're ever in DC, give me a shout. I have fond memories of our years together and I wish all of you the best of fortune and good health..
Cheers,
Jim
